YORK City Knights have bolstered the ranks for their assault on the Betfred Championship by securing the services of Sam Scott, one of the big players of the League One title success, on a new two-year deal.

The strong-running, hard-hitting 28-year-old back-row forward was the Press and Players' Player of the Year in his first stint in the Minster city back in 2013, and he was again a key performer this year as James Ford's men won promotion.

He will now stay with the club until the end of 2020.

Another member of the title-winning squad, Adam Robinson, however, has confirmed his departure by signing for arch-rivals Hunslet.

Scott made 24 appearances and scored eight tries this year as York were crowned League One champions - one of those touchdowns coming in the final-day victory over Whitehaven that sealed the success and another in the vital narrow win over Oldham earlier in September.

Head coach James Ford said: "I'm delighted that Sam has committed for another two years. I believe this highlights Sam’s confidence in the direction this club is going.

"I've really enjoyed working with him and appreciated what he brought the team and club last season.

"Sam is still keen to develop his game and that attitude excites me as I’m confident he can kick on and perform at even higher levels."

Scott came through the ranks in Wakefield’s academy before starring in the Sheffield squad that reached back-to-back Championship Grand Finals in 2011 and 2012.

The Knights were relegated to League One in his first stint in 2013, but, after picking up his two individual awards, stayed in the Championship with Batley, where he was a regular for three years before returning to Sheffield for 2017 and helping the Eagles lift the Championship Shield.

He turned down other Championship clubs to rejoin the Knights crusade a year ago.

Meanwhile, Robinson has penned a one-year deal with Hunslet.

The Press revealed 10 days ago that the 31-year-old would be leaving Bootham Crescent and that a move to south Leeds was on the cards.

He played 22 times for York this season, but sat out the last two matches after picking up a niggling injury.

In total he featured 46 times for the Knights since having a four-match stint on loan from Halifax in 2016 and then joining permanently in 2017.

He previously played 83 games for Fax, 15 for Batley, 39 for Dewsbury, 35 for Oldham and 31 for Doncaster, with whom he started his pro career in 2006.

Now on 249 career appearances, his 250th will come with the Parksiders.

Hunslet boss Gary Thornton said: “Robbo is a fantastic addition to our squad.

“He had a major influence on York City Knights' promotion season, having spent the past two years there.

“Whenever we have played against him he has caused us no end of problems, so to have him in our ranks is a huge boost for us.

“He is a big, uncompromising front-rower, who will add size and power to our pack, and bring fantastic experience and leadership qualities.

“He has been around the Championship at League One at some very good clubs, and his experience will be hugely important to our younger front-rowers.

“Robbo is highly regarded and respected within our game, and is a fantastic bloke as well as a great player.

“Again we had to fend off interest from other clubs wanting his signature, and I’m delighted he has chosen Hunslet.”

Robinson follows Dan Hawksworth in moving from York to Hunslet this autumn.

He said: “I’m really excited about this new challenge at Hunslet. I think the progress they made last year really grabbed the attention of a few clubs in the league (League One) this year.

“Gary is a great coach and one that I’ve had many conversations with over the years.

“I’m not coming here to make up the numbers. I’ve played in a lot of successful teams and I see no reason why this squad can’t continue that.

“Hopefully I can help develop the younger players and bring a winning attitude to the group.”
