CITY of York men's first team are still looking for their first win of term after slipping to ninth in the North Hockey League premier division following defeat to Deeside Ramblers.

The promoted Minster city outfit failed to build on last week's draw at Timperley as they let slip a half-time lead and fell to a 3-2 defeat in their first home fixture back in the league's top tier.

City started poorly, conceding a goal via a back-post deflection in the early exchanges, but they worked hard to get back in the game, with some neat skills from playmaker Tom Feasby down the left winning a penalty corner which Mike Carter converted with a drag flick to bring the scores level.

The two teams were evenly-matched throughout the remainder of the first half, but Louis McManus finished off some good work by new recruit Henry Laming in a fast counter attack to put City of York 2-1 up at the break.

A difficult second half against a high-pressing Deeside team saw York concede another deflection from a crash ball into the circle before a disappointing third left them chasing the game again.

City were able to carve out a number of clear opportunities but could not make them count.

The visitors started slowly, with the hosts putting on early pressure and taking the lead after 10 minutes with a snap shot. City were lucky not to concede more before the break as they struggled to deal with Driffield’s high press but, in the second half, took the game to the hosts and Foster found the net with eight minutes to go.
