ACOMB men's perfect start to the Yorkshire Hockey League division two season continued as they claimed a hard-earned 3-1 win at Rotherham II.

The Tangerines sit top of the table, two points ahead of cross-city rivals City of York IV.

Rotherham started the stronger but their young forward line were wasteful in possession and Acomb's rearguard defended penalty corners comfortably. Nevertheless, the hosts took a deserved lead five minutes before half-time.

Within eight minutes of the restart, Tom Brown equalised from a penalty corner and, two minutes on, brother Jonny Brown put Acomb ahead with a first-time strike from Tom's lifted ball.

The hosts had a good chance to level when the ball struck Ryan Smith’s foot on the line, but keeper Craig Brown made an excellent save from the penalty flick.

David Richardson sealed matters with four minutes left when neatly deflecting in Tom Brown's strike.

Acomb II got their division five north campaign off to a good start with a 5-2 win at Bradford III.

The hosts took a surprise lead with a turn and shot from the top of the 'D', but Acomb - who had started well - took just six minutes to equalise as Rich Luscombe slotted into the corner after good work by Ant Daley and the returning Harry Ellis.

Just before the break, Acomb took the lead through Owen Wilkie and, two minutes into the second half, he made it three, beating four men and hammering in.

Bradford pulled a goal back with a penalty flick but, following a fine save from returning keeper Mike Brown, Ellis got the valuable fourth before killing the game off with his second in the dying minutes.

Acomb Ladies also have a maximum return from their first two games of Yorkshire League division one following a 1-0 home win over Lindum II.

The visitors' youth and skill put the Tangerines' defence under pressure at times, but keeper Stephanie Barker’s saves alongside the defensive work of Sam Storr and Jane Elsworth kept them in the game.

Kerry Woods got the breakthrough in the 18th minute, collecting and firing in a defensive clearance.

Lindum had more possession in the second half, but they had few clear-cut chances on goal and were reduced to 10 players in a fractious finish.
