ACOMB Hockey Club's men's first team opened their Yorkshire League division two campaign by battling to a 2-1 win at Ben Rhydding 2.

The Tangerines took a seventh-minute when a penalty corner flick by Matt Dickenson flew past a static keeper.

The youthful home side had plenty of possession but Acomb’s new formation kept them at bay until the 22nd minute when they levelled from a penalty corner neatly deflected passed skipper Craig Brown.

The second half saw more pressure from the home side - who are looking to bounce back up after relegation - but Acomb’s defence held solid with Baz Whitfield, Simon Theaker, David Bell and Stuart Baxter excelling.

Acomb relied on the longer aerial ball taking out the home midfield and allowing the speedy Tangerine forward line to make dangerous forays into the defence.

One of these, started by a Jamie Robinson steal, found the energetic Sam Lynn. He linked with Dickenson who neatly put the ball home.

Acomb could have doubled their lead when the home keeper encroached too close to a lifted ball, but no penalty was awarded.

Acomb 2's opponents, Boston Spar 4, conceded their game.

Acomb Ladies opened their Yorkshire League division one campaign with a 1-0 win at neighbours City of York 3 - thanks to a late Kerry Woods goal.

A great team effort meant much of the play took place in York's half, with the Tangerines’ defence soaking up any pressure.

Captain Vicky Wrigley worked tirelessly to keep the ball out of defence and maintain pressure at the other end, supported by Sam Storr and Emily Watson in midfield.

The York keeper made many excellent saves before Woods won it in the last five minutes.
