MALTON & Norton paid for indiscipline as they missed out on making it two wins out of two at the start of the North One East season when falling 36-31 at Huddersfield YMCA.

The game was the last in Malt colours of two backs who have served the club well in recent times - Luke Raduva and Nick Rangiuira - and they both fittingly got on the scoresheet. Raduva notched a try and Rangiuira two conversions to add Paul Angus' one.

However, it was not a winning goodbye, two interception tries for the hosts proving key as the Ryedale side had to settle for two bonus points only.

A Malt spokesman said: "It was a frustrating afternoon which, without the intercepts and too high a penalty count, should have yielded five points instead of two."

He added: "We wish Luke Raduva and Nick Rangiuira well for their respective futures."

Next up for M&N is Saturday's game against Morpeth, who have won both games so far.ive futures.

Malton's team at Huddersfield showed three changes, and one of them - returning skipper Sam Triffit - crashed over on 12 minutes after a brisk start.

It followed a scrum on halfway which gave Ali Fothergill the chance to run at the opposition and link up with his captain for an unconverted try.

Three minutes later, though, M&N were given a warning of the YMCA goal kicker's ability as he booted an excellent penalty to cut the gap.

On the restart the hosts put together four phases on Malton's line and crashed over.

Then, on the half-hour, they added another penalty, this one from five metres inside the Malton half.

Malton tried to hit back but, in the final play of the first period, YMCA absorbed pressure in their 20-metre zone and then a misjudged pass gifted them an interception try, which duly converted to give the hosts a deserved 18-5 interval lead.

The rain ceased within five minutes of the resumption and, with Malton's heads up and a ball becoming easier to handle, a break by Nick Daley led to a converted try.

His clever back-handed pass was well read by Ben Tenge, who powered through to the sticks.

The sides traded further tries, Raduva on the mark for Malt, before a period of sustained pressure on the YMCA line saw Sean Emms bundled over for a converted effort and a 24-23 Malton lead.

However, indiscipline coupled with some controversial refereeing decisions gave YMCA two more penalty goals, putting the hosts 29-24 up.

The introduction off the bench of new recruit Matthew Bowman had injected some impetus into the Malton pack and his uncompromising tackling and support play was a feature of the final quarter.

However, another converted interception try five minutes from time gave the hosts an unassailable 12-point lead, even though Malton hit back with Rob Featherstone burrowing in for a converted try which at least garnered them a deserved second bonus point.
