NESTLE Rowntree RUFC had a quick reminder of life in the Yorkshire League as they lost 40-14 at Stocksbridge in their first game back in the competitive pyramid.

Trees, successful in the merit league last term, were given an immediate lesson that mistakes at this level will be punished.

Neighbours York RI, conversely, opened with a fine 33-27 victory at Stanley Rodillians - the team that visit Rowntree this Saturday.

Nestle, with a few injuries from pre-season, fielded several new players against Stocksbridge.

They started brightly and after a few minutes should have scored out wide out but a lack of understanding saw Stocksbridge collect a loose ball and clear their lines.

Then a fumbled pass by Trees saw Bridge gather the ball again and score in the opposite corner.

Rowntree had more of the play but a turnover at a ruck saw Bridge spin the ball out wide and score again to lead 14-0.

Trees tried hard to get a breakthrough but could not find any gaps whereas Stocksbridge crossed again from another half-chance before the break.

The York outfit seemed to have more of the play on the resumption but it was Bridge who scored again before Trees' efforts were rewarded with two tries.

Firstly, Fatayi Oketeti charged over and then prop Zak Hardy crossed after a barnstorming 30-metre run, with Jack Daniels converting both efforts.

Nestle seemed to be in with a chance of winning but two late tries by Stocksbridge gave them a flattering scoreline.

On Saturday, York RI will look to continue their winning ways at home to Ossett.
