SUBSTITUTES Jon Parkin and Adriano Moke were both on target as York City completed a 2-0 home win over Blyth Spartans.

After Blyth’s Kieran Green and City midfielder Russ Penn were both sent off in the first half, Parkin eventually broke the deadlock with an 80th-minute spot kick.

Fellow replacement Moke then put the outcome beyond doubt just as the match was entering stoppage time

Victory meant caretaker boss Sam Collins has now taken four points from a possible six during his temporary tenure, following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Brackley.

The first action of the afternoon had earlier seen Adam Bartlett comfortably gather a 15-yard effort from Dan Maguire at his near post after the Blyth striker had cut inside from the left.

Connor Oliver went on to see his free kick deflected wide off the City wall and Sean Reid steered Jarrett Rivers’ corner off target from ten yards.

City gradually eased their way into the game and Wes York’s 15-yard drive was parried by Spartans keeper Peter Jameson, with Alex Nicholson booting the loose ball out for a corner.

Hamza Bencherif went on to head well over from Josh Law’s corner, before good play by Macaulay Langstaff teed up Jake Wright for a curling edge-of-the-box effort that was pushed behind by Jameson.

A lofted Simon Heslop pass then released Langstaff clear on goal, but he dragged wastefully wide from 12 yards

At the end of a patient passing move, meanwhile, David Fergsuon’s one-two with Wright led to a right-footed, 20-yard shot that was caught by Jameson.

City went on to survive a scare when Bencherif could only head a curling Oliver free kick to Reid, who sliced horribly over from ten yards.

Moments later, Blyth were down to ten men on the half-hour mark when Green launched into an ugly late challenge in his own half on Ferguson close to the touchline and referee Ben Speedie wasted no time reaching for his red card.

With the numerical advantage, York’s firm 25-yard drive skidded off the surface and flashed just wide, but Rivers also threatened for Blyth when he exchanged passes with Maguire before testing Bartlett from just outside the penalty area.

The Minstermen continued to keep possession carefully and another good passing move led to Penn finding Langstaff, but the latter’s curling 20-yard attempt was brilliantly tipped around his left-hand upright by Jameson.

Shortly afterwards, Penn then received his marching orders on 38 minutes.

Having been cautioned nine minutes earlier for a lunging foul on Green, he received a second yellow for catching Lewis Horner after the away midfielder had skipped past him just outside the Blyth box.

City subsequently squandered the best chance to open the scoring before the break, as an unmarked Joe Tait headed over after being picked out at the far post by Law’s right-wing free kick.

The hosts continued to create chances in the second half with Heslop playing York in, but his tentative ten-yard shot was pushed behind by Jameson.

Bartlett was then required to push a close-range Robbie Dale header on to the crossbar following Rivers’ cross.

City were soon back on the attack, though, with Langstaff hitting the roof of the Longhurst from 20 yards and flashing a second opportunity wide from the same distance after bringing down Kallum Griffiths’ forward pass.

On the hour, Bencherif was off target with a speculative long-range effort, while a determined Ferguson drilled past Jameson’s right-hand post after Law had pulled the ball back from the byline.

For Blyth, meanwhile, Horner fired over from distance and Dale’s low 25-yard attempt was comfortably gathered by Bartlett.

At the other end, Langstaff curled well off target from just outside the 18-yard area, before City finally made the breakthrough.

Oliver appeared to be harshly penalised for deliberate handball from Ferguson’s cross and Parkin sidefooted the resulting spot kick to Jameson’s right, as the Spartans keeper dived in the opposite direction.

Blyth refused to surrender with a swerving, 20-yard Adam Wrightson shot punched away by Bartlett, but Moke sealed victory, showing great anticipation to latch on to a long ball down the middle, before deftly lifting it over an onrushing Jameson and finding an empty net.

Maguire went on to curl well over from 20 yards in the fifth minute of added-on time, but City finished worthy winners.
