A PAIR of York City Knights Ladies RFLC players have been selected to play in the Women's Super League origins game and are in with a chance of playing for England.
Ashleigh Hyde and Daisy Sanderson have both been picked among the cream of the crop to feature in the Yorkshire v Lancashire match on Sunday, September 2 at Warrington Wolves' Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The players that perform well in this setting will then be considered for selection in the England National Performance Squad on their tour later in the year.
Each Super League club coach picked as many players as they felt could perform at this level. Knights Ladies coach Daryl North's original four included only Hyde because of 17-year-old Sanderson's youth and inexperience.
Hyde had been picked out as a talented player by the Performance Squad coaches, but told she was too small to feature. However, North says extra work in the gym after training and her “passion and desire” have paid dividends and resulted in her call-up.
North said: "The way I see it, it's basically a trial to pick the England team.
"It's huge, absolutely massive. I'm hoping that with this, we can get even more girls down to play rugby.
"Daisy's is a really impressive story - she only played the game a couple of times at school, but now she has almost made the top level almost straight away.
"After this, if they both do well, they could go on to the Performance Squad and train for the big tour, and will hopefully get into the England squad."
