FULFORD Golf Club junior captain George Robson was one of the leading contenders after round one of England Golf's Carris Trophy being played on his home course.

Robson was among a group of 13 players on one-under-par after day one of the English Under-18 boys’ open championship, trailing Sussex teenager Joe Sullivan by five shots.

Sullivan, 16, only got into the tournament from the reserve list but made the most of his chance in the first round with a superb six-under-par 66, firing seven birdies and just one bogey in the hot, muggy sunshine at the south York course.

It was his best-ever score in a major competition and included holing birdies from 25 feet and then 20 feet at 15 and 16.

He topped the leaderboard after day one by three shots from Italian Gregorio De Leo and Eemil Alajarvi of Finland.

Two players were tied on two-under, with Robson's group of 13 one shot behind.

Robson had also got into the comp via the reserve list and took advantage of the opportunity with his round of 71, which included a birdie on the 10th and an eagle three on the 11th.

Defending champion Andrea Romano, of Italy, started with a birdie on the first but then was unable to make ground and closed with four-over 76.
