YORK City Rowing Club members did their club proud home and away at both the Summer Regatta on the Ouse and the prestigious Henley Women's Regatta on the Thames.

The York Summer Regatta saw nearly 200 crews from clubs from as far afield as Cambridge come together for a day’s worth of racing.

And the Minster city crews had a fantastic day, winning 23 out of the 51 events, with many of the victories coming from the junior rowers, including some triumphs against senior rowers.

Not to be outdone by the youngsters, however, masters rowers from the club's 'leisure and progression' group proved themselves not so leisurely on the water by taking wins in the Men’s Masters 'D' and Women’s Masters 'D' quadruple sculls events.

Meanwhile, two YCRC crews had travelled to race at the Henley Women’s Regatta - an ‘aspirational’ quadruple scull of Sophy Nicholson, Helen Waller, Helen Sneath and Louise Hawkyard, and a Junior double scull of Lucy Edmonds and Katarina Bonner.

Due to the number of entries, both crews had to first battle through a time trial qualification to reach the knock-out rounds of their events, which the senior crew exited by two lengths against Imperial College in the first round.

The double scull comfortably beat Canford School in the first round to earn a quarter-final contest against Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School.

By halfway, Edmonds and Bonner were a good length-and-a-half down, but a strong push over the last 500m saw them grab the victory by three feet.

In the semi-final, they faced a much heavier City of Oxford crew and, despite being down by two lengths at halfway, put on another good sprint to close down the Oxford crew in the last 50m, just missing out on the final by a third of a length.

Both crews performed admirably and have paved the way for the Junior boy’s quadruple sculls who will represent the club at Henley this week.

York City Rowing Club invite spectators down to the banks of the Ouse for the 16th York Rotary Annual Dragon Boat Challenge on Sunday, July 15, on what is promised to be a festive day with fancy dress galore. The next rowing event to be hosted by YCRC on the Ouse is the York Autumn Sculls on Sunday 30th September.

Anyone interested in getting involved in rowing are invited to visit the club's webpage www.ycrc.co.uk to find out more about signing up for summer taster sessions.
