HENRY’S Gym fighters struck gold five times at Denmark’s Hvidovre Box Cup.

The winning quintet were George Davey, Rivers Lee Wilson, Rob Magill, Ruslanas Vysockas and Nathan Shepherd, while Sonny Wharton, Rafal Benka and Michael Smith were all beaten finalists, meaning they also brought silver medals back to York.

A total of 13 boxers from the Acomb-based gym, which is run by former World Championship challenger Henry Wharton, made the trip to Scandinavia and the medal haul could have been greater, but for some questionable judging decisions.

Commenting on the Scandinavian trip’s success, Wharton said: “To win five golds and three silvers is a fantastic achievement and we were also on the wrong end of some bad decisions.

“It was a great bonding session for all the lads too. I think it’s made our team closer and stronger.

“When you’re boxing at your home show, it can be a bit every man for themselves but, by going away and wearing the gym’s colours, you tend to support one another more. It’s also good experience to box different nationalities away from your comfort zone.”

Henry’s Gym will host their next show of amateur boxing on Saturday night at the Regents Building, when several championship bouts will be contested.

Doors open at 7pm and the action starts at 8pm, with admission costing £15 for adults and £7 for under-16s.

There are also still tickets available for the visit to the gym of World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall on Sunday, April 15.

Tickets cost £25 or £40 for a VIP package, which includes premium seating and a photograph with Hall.

Along with Hall talking about his amazing life story, compere Jed Stone will provide comedy, whilst a memorabilia auction and raffle will also take place.

Doors will open from 1pm, with tickets and further information available by visiting www.onlineauthentic.co.uk
