WEIGHTLIFTER Holly Knowles is the 2018 Active York Sportsperson of the Year.

Knowles, who is preparing to represent Wales at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast later this year, had to miss missed The Press-sponsored award at the dinner that was held in the University of York’s Roger Kirk Centre on Thursday.

But the award will give her a big boost and was deserved recognition for her achievements.

The long-serving Wigginton Grasshoppers Football Club committee member and York Minster Engineering League stalwart John Jeffery's voluntary efforts were recognised with the City of York Council’s Outstanding Contribution to Sport award.

Other individual prizes went to Harvey Fisher (Young Male Sportsperson of the Year), Lucy Edmunds (Young Female Sportsperson of the Year), Antonia Bunyan (Young Disabled Sportsperson of the Year), Alex Bottrill (Student Sportsperson of the Year), Beth Moulam (Disabled Sportsperson of the Year), Hannah Reeder (Coach of the Year) and Martin Lambert (Volunteer of the Year).

Team and club awards, meanwhile, went to York Minxters Roller Derby (Team/Club of the Year), Heworth Rugby League Club (Junior Team/Club of the Year), Acomb Primary School (Active School of the Year), City Kickabout (Youth Group Provider of the Year) and GoodGym York (Active in York).
