BILLY McEwan is hopeful York City can help out Newcastle Benfield tonight in the same way Leeds United helped out the Minstermen on Friday.

A crowd of more than 4,000 turned out for City's first pre-season friendly to boost the KitKat Crescent coffers and, in turn, McEwan wants the small Northern League club to receive a financial fillip when he takes his Minstermen team to Tyneside.

The match, City's second pre-season outing, was arranged as part of the deal that took striker Richard Brodie from Benfield to York last season.

McEwan said: "We're a small club and Leeds United helped us when we got 4,000 the other night. We're now looking to get a good turn-out tonight and try to help this small club."

From a football point of view, McEwan is set to take the same 20 players that played in Friday's encouraging goalless draw, plus "one or two" other trialists.

"We're taking a lot of players and they will all play," he said. "We're looking at the game to improve our fitness."
