MACCLESFIELD Town will visit York City this evening, having only been beaten by 2016 National League champions Cheltenham during their last dozen outings.

Managed by John Askey, who has been at the Moss Rose helm since April 2013, the Silkmen kicked off the new campaign with a 2-0 home triumph over Torquay.

Following an encouraging end to last term, which saw his team finish tenth in the table, Askey kept his summer surgery to a minimum with, nine of the players who featured at the weekend retained from 2015/16.

Former Whitehawk goalkeeper Craig Ross, Tranmere midfielder Jack Mackreth and Guiseley midfielder, meanwhile, were all handed their debuts, along with ex-Birmingham City left-back Mitch Hancox, who was drafted in on the eve of the new campaign with Davis Fitzpatrick sidelined die to a back injury.

Another new signing Kingsley James might have played a part, but missed out due to illness and could be absent again at Bootham Crescent.

City will be coming up against a familiar for in former centre-back John McCombe who, since his March transfer to the Cheshire club, has helped oversee six clean sheets in 12 matches.

At the other end of the pitch, Macclesfield lost last season's 25-goal leading marksman Kristian Dennis to Chesterfield during the close season.

But ex-Cambridge United forward Chris Holroyd, who managed just one goal in 43 outings last term, has already got off the mark against Torquay and is expected to continue partnering former Morecambe frontman Jack Sampson in attack.

Macclesfield (probable): Ross, Halls, Pilkington, McCombe, Hancox, Rowe, Whitaker, Norburn, Mackreth, Sampson, Holroyd.
