There was a truly remarkable Hunters York and Disrict Senior Cricket League division four game at Sheriff Hutton Bridge as the hosts came within a whisker of overturning a massive total of 304-5 posted by Pickering.

Records tumbled as the home side narrowly failed to pull off a victory in a drawn game which saw 604 runs scored for the loss of 13 wickets.

Both teams topped 300 runs - a feat only once achieved previously when Dunnington and Easingwold each scored 301 in a premier division game in 2004.

As it was, the game which saw Pickering make 304-5 and Sheriff Hutton Bridge reply with 300-8 was certainly the highest aggregate in division four, and possibly in league history.

Pickering's massive target was accrued through Kev Wilson (87), Josh Greenlay (75) and Rob Aconley (69).

A century from Craig Hunter (124), allied to 49 by Steve Clipston and 52 from Dave Ellis, then put Bridge on target for victory with the final over starting with eight runs required and five wickets in hand.

But Eddie Rounthwaite clean-bowled two home batsmen, with a further wicket falling to a run out, leaving the hosts on 300-8.

Civil Service jumped from sixth to third place after Tom Holvey's 5-52 bowled York III to a 49-run defeat.

Graham Mackfall with 4-29 and Stuart Green 4-63 had combined to dismiss Civil Service but not before Richard Wells (31), Neil Purdy (26) and Nick Olney (41) contrived a total of 170. Only Ben Horseman with 43 made a significant score for York as Holvey and Rob Whitehead 3-13 turned them over for 121.

Huby's batting caved in when they took first innings against Selby whose Colin Banks took 5-11.

Huby, for whom Darren Howell made 26, were all out for 87, Selby securing a six-wicket win which saw Kev Lamb make 36no.

In division six, Huntington skipper Tom Shaw produced the best all-round performance of the season when he followed his unbeaten 98 with 6-15 as Cawood suffered a severe mauling to lose by 166 runs.

Len Watson, who has played for Huntington for more than 50 seasons, got his side off to a sound start with 47 while Richard Shaw made 33.

Shaw them made his career-best though just missing out on a maiden century while Chris Smith chipped in with 28 to help Huntington reach 292-2.

Shaw then ripped through the Cawood innings in which only Steve Clark's 26 offered a glimmer of light as they were bowled out for 90.

There was an opening stand of monumental proportions when Stillington batted first against visiting Wilberfoss.

Skipper Kevin Borwell played the dominant role as he and Dennis North put the visiting bowlers to the sword. Borwell made a career-best 172 out of the opening stand of 258 before being dismissed.

North, who is in his 51st year as a virtual ever-present, went on to reach 62no as the home side moved to 292-2.

Carlton Towers made a respectable 178-4 in reply through Richard Knapp (42), Darren Graves (49) and Stuart Watson (36no) to gain a draw.
