YORK City have expressed their shock and disappointment following the announcement that Michael Coulson has signed a pre-contract agreement to join St Johnstone at the end of the season.
The out-of-contract attacker has agreed terms with the Scottish Premier League side side and will leave Bootham Crescent on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling when his two-year Minstermen deal expires this summer.
A club statement, issued on learning the news, read: "York City Football Club are surprised and disappointed to learn that Michael Coulson has signed a pre-contract with St Johnstone. The club is particularly disconcerted with the timing of this announcement and hopes that Michael Coulson is still committed to his current employer and is focused on York City’s fight for Football League survival."
Former Barnsley forward Coulson arrived at City from Grimsby following promotion to the Football League in 2012 and has made 126 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.
The Scarborough-born, 27-year-old also shared the last Press Player of the Month award for February with on-loan Middlesbrough striker Bradley Fewster.
