ON-LOAN Sheffield United striker Diego De Girolamo has left York City to join Sky Bet League Two rivals Northampton instead.

City boss Russ Wilcox has been given the news from Bramall Lane that the Italian under-20 international will spend the remainder of the campaign at Sixfields instead.

“Sheffield United have called him back and sent him out to Northampton instead,” Wilcox explained. “That’s the information I have received and there’s not a lot we can do from our side.

“I don’t really know what’s happened. It’s disappointing for us but a situation that’s out of our control.

“The agreement was there to keep him until the end of the season but, with youth loans, that can be broken.”

Dave Winfield, meanwhile, has been recalled from his loan spell at AFC Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old centre-half made seven appearances for the London based club, including Tuesday’s 2-1 away defeat at Mansfield Town.

With Stephane Zubar having been forced off during City's 1-0 defeat by Bury with a thigh injury, Winfield will now go straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to Accrington Stanley.
