YORK City's new striker Richard Brodie was recommended to Bolton Wanderers last year but the Premiership club could have failed to recognise his potential after playing him at centre-back.

Brodie played in a juniors tournament for the Trotters in France but never got an opportunity to display his attacking ability.

His former coach at Newcastle Benfield, Paddy Atkinson said: "A scout sent him to Bolton but they saw he was 6ft 3in and assumed he was a centre-half so the trip was a bit of a waste of time really.

"That's Premiership clubs for you."
