SHEFFIELD Wednesday legend Nigel Worthington is supporting their big city rivals United in the League One play-off fight.

Worthington, who played 417 games for the Owls during a ten-year spell at Hillsborough, will be cheering on the Blades as a sign of gratitude for the part current Bramall Lane player-coach Richard Cresswell played in helping York City preserve their Football League status.

The Minstermen boss believes Cresswell should be christened “Mr York” after returning to his first club and scoring twice in five games before he was recalled by United earlier this month.

Cresswell was also one of the first to call City chairman Jason McGill with his congratulations after learning the club were safe following Saturday’s 1-0 win at Dagenham.

Due to his efforts, Worthington is now ready to cheer on the red-and-whites in their semi-final clashes against Yeovil and hopes they reclaim their place in the Championship.

The first leg against Yeovil will be played at Bramall Lane on Friday night with the return match in Somerset on Monday.

The aggregate winners will then meet either Brentford or Swindon in the play-off final at Wembley.

On his hopes for Cresswell and the Blades, Worthington said: “I think Cressie should be known as Mr York.

“There was no better person to turn to to give us a kick-start than him because of his feelings for the club.

“He’s a great professional and an example for everybody with his behaviour on and off the pitch and I wish him all the best in the play-offs with Sheffield United even though I shouldn’t be saying that as a Wednesdayite.”
