YORK City boss Billy McEwan is both surprised and relieved that Clayton Donaldson is the club's only player to be called up to the England National Game XI squad.

Donaldson has been elevated from the provisional non-League Under-23 squad for the first time as Paul Fairclough prepares for next Wednesday's duel against Holland at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

McEwan has congratulated 12-goal top scorer Donaldson on his call-up but felt others from KitKat Crescent could have received recognition for their efforts as well.

Left-winger Martyn Woolford and right-back Darren Craddock are amongst the City players that would both be eligible for duty but, with back-to-back away games at Forest Green Rovers and Grays Athletic following next week's international game, McEwan is relieved that more of his players will not be risking injury or fatigue by facing the Dutch.

He said: "I'm pleased for Clayton that he has been called up to the England non-League side as it represents progress for the club and the player as it's not that long since he was on the scrapheap.

"He's done well in a short space of time so it's good for him but I don't want him to get injured and, to be honest, I would prefer to be talking about him as a York City Football League player than a non-League international.

"Sometimes, you can also go away on things like this and people can fill your head with things, saying you can get this and that money-wise at other clubs."

About the absence of any of his other players in the squad, McEwan added: "I'm a bit disappointed for the boys as other teams have got more than one player in it and we have got a young side but, on the other hand, I'm pleased because I don't want them going away and getting injured."
