LONG-SERVER Dan Parslow is confident York City can complete a successful battle to beat the drop this weekend.

The 27-year-old has witnessed the Minstermen recover from a run of 16 games without a win to collect 11 points out of a possible 15 from their last five fixtures, culminating in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Southend.

City head to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday needing a point to guarantee survival and Parslow is undaunted by the trip to face hosts who need a win themselves to preserve their League status.

“We’ve just got to keep looking after ourselves because, if we do what we can do, we will be all right,” Parslow reasoned.

“We are on a good little run at the minute.

“We have found our feet and I think it was just about getting that first result and the confidence has grown within the squad since then.

“Our matchwinners are looking a threat every time we go forward now and, as a defensive player, that takes away so much pressure.

“It just helps you catch a breather in games when you take chances.

“It would have been great to have wrapped it all up on Saturday but teams are scrapping for their lives and picking up points.

“That’s just the way it is, so we have to go to Dagenham and get a result.”

Parslow also created club history at the weekend by becoming the first player to win the Billy Fenton Clubman of the Year trophy for a third time.

The former Cardiff defender has eclipsed the likes of Gordon Staniforth, Keith Walwyn, Jon McCarthy, Barry Jones and Alan Fettis, who are all two-time past winners of the award, decided by supporters.

On that honour and receiving more votes than worthy candidates from this season’s squad, Parslow added: “I’m hugely proud.

“In my time at York, we have had the likes of Clayton Donaldson and Neal Bishop win it and they have gone on to both play very well in League One.

“Looking further back, there are a few names that I don’t know to be honest but Alan Fettis was a great goalkeeper who won it twice, and I am privileged and honoured to be awarded with it three times now.

“I will just always try to give my best whether that is in the centre of midfield, centre-back or full-back and getting recognised to receive the award is great.

“We have a great bunch of lads and there have been a few contenders this season.

“You look at people like Chris Smith and Michael Ingham and they have both stood up to be counted “I think any one of us could have picked up the award, so it’s fantastic to be given it again.”

Parslow is one of a sizeable number of players out of contract this summer, meanwhile, with negotiations having been put on hold while the club scrap for survival.

But City’s versatile and ever-reliable performer is hoping to still be on the Bootham Crescent books next season.

“Nothing has been said because there are more important things to worry about,” Parslow pointed out.

“We need to make sure the club’s future is sorted first.

“Hopefully, we will get that all important result and then sort out all that stuff because I love it here.”
