An inscription from 1487 records the repair of the section of the wall between Fishergate Postern and Walmgate Bar by the then Lord Mayor, William todd. After rioting the following year, the archway was walled up and remained so for centuries
7/7/61 -  Traffic was diverted during the restoration of George Street Bar. Stonemasons replaced weathered stonework with re-cut old stones and the structure was cement grouted.

Hetherton Street was badly affected by the floods of 1947, which reached a record level of 17' 1". The street was built in 1891 and was at the current site of Marygate car park. The street was mostly demolished in 1973.

Restoration work is carried out at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall in 1938.
Haughton School at 31 St Saviourgate. It was founded in the 18th century by local citizen William Haughton, who died in 1773. The school closed in 1935.
This uncaptioned picture was found in our archives. Thanks to all our online readers who helped identify it as North Street, looking towards Lendal Bridge. The picture is believed to have been taken in the 1890s.
