STUDENTS at Easingwold School welcomed a veteran of the Falklands War to their annual senior prize giving event last night.

Martin Withers was a Vulcan pilot during the conflict and flew 8,000 miles to carry out bombing raids on Port Stanley. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. He was asked to the award ceremony to give a talk on his experience to more than 70 students and their families.

The event celebrates the academic and extra-curricular achievements of senior students during the previous academic year and was attended by school’s new head teacher, Phil Benaiges, who spoke about his vision for the school’s future.

John Butcher, assistant head teacher, said: “It’s one of the highlights of the year, especially the first term, and we are really honoured that Martin Withers agreed to be our guest. With it being Mr Benaiges’ first prize giving as well, it makes it all the more special.”

The awards ceremony saw more than 70 awards given to students at the school, and also featured a solo musical performance from pupil Imogen Brewer.

Deborah Selkirk, learning resource centre manager at the school, said: “The children get really excited and like to dress up for the event.

“They feel it’s a big achievement, to win an award which are all sponsored by businesses in the area. The pupils feel very honoured because they have worked hard all through the last year, so to receive one of the awards is a big achievement. They all get together and celebrate, it’s nice.”

The school’s head boy and girl, Matthew Batten and Ellen Hughes, and deputy head boy and girl, Jez Low and Emily Hake, also spoke at the ceremony.
