KEEP fit and raise funds this week at a series of sporting challenge in aid of Sports Relief.

Community Leisure, which has gyms at Derwent Pool in Norton and the Northern Ryedale Sports Centre in Pickering, is hosting a Coast to Coast challenge until Friday.

Members and staff at both sites will be asked to donate £1 to complete five kilometres or £2 for 10km on either the treadmill, rowing machine or bike.

Fitness co-ordinator Peter Nelson said he wanted to organise an event to support Sports Relief as well as raising people’s awareness of keeping fit.

“This is a huge year for sport in this country in general with the Olympics coming up,” he said.

“With all that is going on it is also an ideal opportunity for local people to find out what is available in this area as well.”

Sports Relief aims to get people together to get active while raising money to help the lives of poor and vulnerable people in this country and abroad.

Malton Community Sports Centre is also looking for people to taken part in a Sport Relief Mile on Sunday.

The event is being held as part of a family fun day from 10am and entrants can choose to complete, one, three or six miles.

Jay Rowley, community sport manager, said in partnership with Ryedale Council they would be hosting a range of family fun activities on the day, including a bouncy castle, face painting, penalty shoot out competition, dance and exercise classes.

“The Malton Mile is set to be an amazing event. It’s fantastic that so many people from Malton are gathering together to show their support for Sport Relief 2012,” he said.

“From teeny tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock, there’s something for everyone on the big day.”

Anyone who would like to take part in the Coast to Coast challenge should phone Peter Nelson on 01653 693407.
