MEMBERS of a North Yorkshire council have voted to give themselves tablet computers in a move which the authority says will save £10,000 a year.

Scarborough Borough Council said replacing paper agendas with the devices will allow them to cut printing and postage costs and will also be cheaper than providing laptops and broadband access for councillors.

However, independent councillor Janet Jefferson, who opposed the change, said it was an “over-indulgence”.

Ian Anderson, the council’s head of legal and support services, said it was a way of providing “efficient methods of communication”.
