SPOT checks by road safety teams have revealed North Yorkshire has some of the safest school buses in the UK.

Just over five per cent of vehicles inspected by experts from North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council and the Vehicle Operating Standards Agency (VOSA) were found to be in need of attention, compared to a national average of 19 per cent.

Operation Coachman, which was carried out last month, saw 112 vehicles contracted to the county council being checked, with six having safety-related defects and three of these being classed as minor and fixed immediately.

They included defective wipers, locked emergency doors and a damaged seatbelt.
