YORK is heading for a May bank holiday washout on Monday, with the first heavy rain in many weeks expected to fall in the city.

But residents and tourists should be able to enjoy some pleasant sunshine tomorrow and on Sunday, albeit with some showers possible on Sunday afternoon, before the Atlantic storm arrives on Monday.

BBC Weather in association with MeteoGroup says sunny spells and light winds are expected over the weekend, with a maximum temperature of 11C tomorrow and 13C on Sunday.

But on Monday, it is expected to turn increasingly cloudy with outbreaks of blustery and heavy rain by the afternoon.

Next Tuesday won[t be much better, with blustery showers or spells of rain at times.

The Bank Holiday marks a dramatic shift in the weather pattern by ending the domination of the UK by high pressure, with showers or longer periods of rain expected for much of the following fortnight.
