REPAIRS are being carried out to a bridge after it was hit by a vehicle.

Barnet House Railway Bridge in Goathland was damaged after the incident on Tuesday.

North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team has started on a four-week repair scheme, with a full road closure in place.

Barnet House Railway Bridge, known locally as Cow Wath Railway Bridge, crosses the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, heading into Goathland from Whitby.

There is a diversion route in place via the A169 and Moorgates, although this is only suitable for vehicles under 11ft 3in.

County Cllr Don Mackenzie, executive member for access, said: “Work began on site immediately after the incident to make the area safe.

"We are now repairing the damage to the bridge that took place this week as, well as the damage on the opposite side due to a collision earlier in the year.

“Unfortunately, vehicle strikes on our bridges, many of which are listed structures, are becoming more frequent. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, and ask for your cooperation during the works period.”

Pedestrian access will be maintained where it is safe to do so. For live updates and details of the closure, visit northyorks.gov.uk/roadworks-map
