A UNIQUE property which includes a burial plot has gone on the market in Malton.
Malton Lodge, off Princess Road in Malton, is a three-bedroomed detached house, located on the outer limits of New Malton Cemetery, with a guide price of offers in excess of £250,000.
Owned by Malton Town Council, the property is being sold as part of a programme to make improvements to the cemetery.
Unusually, the sale includes the acquisition of a burial plot in the cemetery, should the new owner wish to have this included.
Cllr Paul Emberley, mayor of Malton, said: “An opportunity arose earlier this year to sell the property, which had been occupied for approximately 20 years, when our tenant decided to move to another part of the town.
“Town council members subsequently made a decision to sell the asset earlier this year as part of a wider investment programme in order to make substantial improvements to the cemetery.”
Gail Cook, Malton Town Council clerk, said: “Our wider programme of works includes undertaking a sizeable investment to improve the cemetery, including the restoration of the main gates on Princess Road, new traditional signage, stone cleaning, re-surfacing and kerbing to some of the roadways, the widening of certain access roads inside the cemetery and reinstatement of the traditional iron railings to the frontage of Malton Lodge.”
Mrs Cook added: “The reinstatement of the substantive inner set of traditional vehicular and pedestrian gates is a key priority as part of the project, we believe the original gates were removed during World War Two, although the most significant investment of all is a major six-figure restoration programme for the two stone chapels of Rest and the central bell tower.”
Restoration work will begin on the two chapels later this month, with anticipated completion before Christmas.
