NORTH Yorkshire’s youth justice service has been praised in a national probation report.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation awarded an overall rating of “good”, and the quality of its partnerships and services for children “outstanding”.

“There is much to commend North Yorkshire Youth Justice Service – this is a well-led and well-managed service,” said Chief Inspector of Probation, Justin Russell.

“Staff are committed to the children that they work with and have high aspirations for them.”

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) say one of its highly praised initiatives is a pop-up shed that delivers restorative justice projects and supports development skills.

The service has also partnered with a social enterprise for children with social care needs by developing vocational qualifications and English, maths and ICT skills.

“I am delighted that the inspectors recognised our strong partnership vision for Youth Justice in North Yorkshire,” said Stuart Carlton, director of children and young people’s services.

“As we have improved our prevention and diversion support, there are now fewer young people in the criminal justice system.”
