“LOVE local business” is the message from the Gazette & Herald as we urge readers to come together to support shops in Ryedale.

As shops and businesses start to reopen, we are launching a campaign urging people to continue their local shopping habits which many have embraced during the lockdown and have helped bring our community together.

Nigel Burton, the Gazette & Herald editor, said: “The Gazette is proud of its long tradition as a campaigning newspaper.

“Over the past few weeks we have done all we can to support the Ryedale community and the amazing way the people have come together to help each other in these difficult times.

“As we start to emerge to the new normality we need to do even more to support the wonderful array of independent shops and businesses in which Ryedale excels.

“From village stores and farm shops in rural areas to the businesses which are key to our wonderful market towns, Ryedale has such an amazing diversity and now more than ever needs our readers’ support.

“Love Local Business is asking people to do just that - support local shops- and let’s get Ryedale back to its glorious best.”

Cllr Keane Duncan, leader of Ryedale District Council, said:‘Ryedale’s hardworking business people need our help more than ever. After a tough few months, it’s vital that we all stay safe and shop local. With everyone’s support we can ensure shop owners and traders are in a strong position to rebuild and come back stronger than ever.

“Thank you to the Gazette & Herald for its continued support and publicity for local business over recent weeks. I know how much it is appreciated.”

Tom Naylor Leyland, director, Visit Malton, said: “The Gazette’s new campaign is a fantastic idea and just what is needed right now to support our brilliant and hard-working local businesses. It’s never been more important to support local.”

Thirsk and Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake added: “This week marks a major milestone towards our economic recovery as non-essential shops open for the first time in three months. Local shops are the lifeblood of our regional economy and sell a wonderful range of produce, much of which is grown or made in Yorkshire. I would encourage everyone to get out and start spending again, social distancing permitting of course.”
