A HISTORY group is creating a coronavirus quilt to remember their lockdown experiences.

The Kirkbymoorside History Group, which collects historical archives, including photographs, film footage and memorabilia, is asking people to create a personalised square.

The quilt will be made up of 32 squares and anyone can submit a painting, embroidery or felting design on a 20cm x 20cm square – personal to their experiences during the pandemic.

“Kirkbymoorside has a wealth of creativity,” said Louise Mudd, a member of the Kirkbymoorside History Group.

“During these unprecedented times, we thought it would be great to produce something beautiful that represents people’s experiences.

“The response has been really positive; we are providing the squares and there is only 10 left to decorate and finish.

“As for the design, we leave that up to you, although we ask everyone to communicate their design idea to avoid similarities.

“The project is open to everyone and we even have completed squares from far away places, including Jacksonville, Florida and Wagga Wagga, in Australia.

“Hopefully, the tapestry project is finished by October so we can locate a permanent display.”

During the coronavirus pandemic, the Kirkbymoorside History Group is hoping to collect additional diaries, memorabilia and photographs from residents.

“This is an unprecedented event and we are hoping diaries will form a valuable resource for future generations to see just how our lives have been affected,” added Louise.

“All too often, important invoices, books, records, photos, film footage or a piece of memorabilia gets discarded.”
