BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Local History Society - At the meeting of the society on Wednesday, February 5, members watched the film The Story of Wheat. The film which was commissioned by Harry Burgess of the Victory Mill in Thorntondale in the 1950s takes the viewer from the sowing of corn to children eating jam tarts made with Burgesses famous Gold Medal flour but also includes shots of the Derwent Hunt, Thornton Show, Wykeham point to point and Pickering Carnival. A large audience thoroughly enjoyed the show helped by a commentary from Brian Glaves for the benefit of those of who were not around in

the 1950s. The meeting was also told of the availability of the report on the 2019 excavations on the Castle Hill in Brompton conducted by the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society and the project of the North Yorkshire County Record Office entitled Great North Yorkshire Sons and Daughters whose next subject will be Sir George Cayley. The next meeting is on March 4, at which Martin Bland will talk on The Forge in Forge Valley. Everyone is welcome to this meeting which is in the village hall at 7.30pm.

Church - There is no service at All Saints Brompton on Sunday, February 23, but within the Benefice there will be Communion services at Snainton at 9.30am and Wykeham at 11am. Hutton Buscel has Evensong at 6.30pm using the Book of Common Prayer. As always All Saints at Brompton is kept open in daylight hours for those who wish to spend any time inside.

FARNDALE

The Runaways - Friday, March 28, doors open 7pm for 7.30pm, at Farndale Village Hall, Church Houses, Farndale, proudly presents a recently released film filmed on the North York Moors, the NYMR, Pickering, Thirsk, Whitby and other local places. Certificate 12A. This film charts the exploits of three runaway children, two donkeys as the embark on journey across the moors. All welcome.

Quiz - There will be a family pub quiz at the Crown Inn on Sunday, March 1, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. In aid of St Chad’s Church, Hutton-le-Hole.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Menzown - Murder, Mystery and Mayhem was the title for Edward Harrison’s talk to the members. He has a collection of original broadsheets telling the stories of long-ago murders trials and executions. The vote of thanks was given by Alan Turner, who thanked Edward for sharing his hobby with members and said that the talk had been unusual and fascinating.

Ladies Fellowship - The AGM took place in February and was well attended. Helen Robertshaw opened the meeting with a lovely poem about happiness. Members looked back over the speakers and various activities and outings which they have enjoyed over the past year and made plans for the coming year. Dorothy Collis had prepared a financial report and subscriptions remain unchanged. There were thanks and flowers for Kathy and helpers. The night out at the King’s Head was a great success. They enjoyed a really good meal and celebrated Margaret Carter’s birthday with a lovely cake baked by Kathy Robson. It was agreed that they should sponsor Lesley Hughes’ 2021 calendar in aid of the Pickering Hedgehog Rescue. Business over, they enjoyed a game and a quiz and the evening ended with a faith supper and cups of tea and time for catching up. Margaret Carter, Margaret Gamble, Chrissie Wright, and Barbara Coram all celebrate birthdays this month. Birthday cards had also been sent to Joan Baines and Norma Griffiths. The next get-together is on Wednesday, March 11, to do some spring-cleaning at All Saints where they will meet from 6.30pm.

Bach & Ravel - North York Moors Chamber Music Festival will hold a concert at All Saints Church Saturday, March 7, at 7pm. Rachel Kolly on violin and Jamie Walton with the cello. Bridge Club - The results from Tuesday, February 11. North/South winners were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 63.6 per cent. In second place Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 56.8 per cent. East/West winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 62.2 per cent. In second place Bo and Tony Simpson with 58.3 per cent.

LEAVENING

Pancake coffee morning - On Saturday, February 22, there is the annual Leavening pancake coffee morning in the Methodist Schoolroom in Leavening (Main Street), from 10am to noon. It will be £3 for pancake and a drink or £10 for a family of four. There will be guess how many sweets in a jar, guess the weight of a Simnel cake, together with a cake stall. Everyone welcome.

Church - Christmas Crib Offerings came to £54.95. There was a letter of thanks from Friends of the Hold Land on the notice board at St Leonard’s and St Mary’s RC Church. Apostleship of the Sea - A thank you note from the Apostleship of the Sea is on the notice board acknowledging the last parcel of woolly hats from St Leonard’s and St Joseph’s. Bridge club - Charles and Hazel Ward were the winners of the first session of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs competition with Keith Freeman and Mike Shawcross taking second place and Richard Hazlerigg and Bryan Hone third. On Thursday the North-South winners were Roger and Ruth Mattingly ahead of Judith Scott and Joan Pickering while Sheila Miller and Philip Mason won as East-West with Andrew and Margaret Bell second. In the Yorkshire League on Sunday Malton A lost 18-2 in a poor performance against York A but Malton B had an excellent 17-3 win over Keighley C.

NORTON

Support group - The February meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group was held in Trinity Methodist Church where members had an afternoon of “games and relaxation”. Members brought a selection of games, including dominoes and bagatelle and quizzes, followed by tea and cake. Menus were given out for the spring lunch, which will take place on April 2. Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club held its AGM at the monthly lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel on Tuesday, February 11, under the chairmanship of Colin Ruston. Elected to serve for 2020 were David Haddon-Reece (chairman), David Billett (secretary and treasurer), Terence Boyle, Ron Murray, Colin Ruston and Charles Weston (committee members). Draw - The numbers for week commencing February 10 for Pickering Town Football Club Weekly Draw were 32, 35 and 22. There were no winners so next week’s pot will be £375.

Pancake & Puds Evening - Rievaulx Methodist Church is arranging a Pancake & Puds Evening to be held on Shrove Tuesday, February 25, in Rievaulx Village Hall from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Drop in and enjoy a wide selection of delicious Pancakes & Puddings for very reasonable prices. All proceeds for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

RILLINGTON

Pancake workshop - On Shrove Tuesday (February 25) the Coach and Horses is holding a children’s pancake workshop from 3pm. The cost is £2.50 per child who will receive two pancakes and treats, as well as a range of children’s activities. Adults can relax with drinks offers which include Prosecco, cocktails and beer.

Race night - A charity Race Night in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society is being held in the Fleece on Friday, March 13, from 8.30am to 11.30pm. Race sponsors are needed for the eight races. SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached and Reader in training Pauline Giddings assisted at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Richard based his sermon on the theme of the day which this week reflected on the power, and the beauty of God’s Creation. Sue Johnson and Clare Firth were welcomers and Clare and Laura Normandale served refreshments and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Janette Biltcliffe. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward Allan Dunnington and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Tina Greenley who read Psalm 15 and Denise Earnshaw who read from Matthew’s Gospel. The service next week at 10.30am has been arranged by members of the church.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, February 23, at 9am.

Methodist News - The Monday bible fellowship met and continued with their study of the Gospel of John. The Tuesday Coffee Morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and your kind donations for coffee continue to be given to St Hilda’s Parish Church. Thursday craft club met and enjoyed the four C’s, craft, coffee, chat and cake. Come along and join them. Pancake Praise will be held on Shrove Tuesday, February 25, as part of the coffee morning. Pancakes to eat, your own choice of toppings. There will be singalong with Jean on the guitar and a pancake tossing competition and they will hear about the meaning of Shrove Tuesday. Sunday worship was led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown who spoke about the Bread of Life. Opening choruses were with Jean on the guitar and Chris Cade on the organ. Readers were Kim Canterbury and Sandra Cade. A sketch, The Bakers Shop, was acted by Janet and Jean and was much enjoyed. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Rev Christine Hey and all are invited to come along.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Lynn Hempsall gave a very interesting illustrated talk on her volunteer work with the young large apes in Borneo. Members were most interested in her talk and promised the next choir meeting’s collection for her charity. John Woodmancey was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 25, at 7.15pm. The Rev Mark Brosnan will lead us into

Lent.

SLINGSBY

Ladies group - The annual general meeting was held on Tuesday, February11. After 16 years Shelagh Richards stepped down from the committee and two new members were elected, Liz Senior and Diane Watson. A very interesting programme this year includes, a cheesemaker, Determined Women of Minster Yard, a NY Moors ranger, My Granny’s Postcards and an antiques valuation evening. The group is also visiting the Worsley Arms Hotel for a film and supper evening, plus a day trip to the mill outlet at Batley. The next meeting will be held in the Methodist hall on Tuesday, March 10, at 7.15pm, where the speaker Chris Dudinska will give a talk on last wishes. New members welcome.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge results - The results for February 10. In First position were Carole Dixon and Kathleen Alnutt with 68.1 per cent. In Second position were Mary Mortonson and Lynda Lockwood with 65.3 per cent.

WESTOW

Open doors - Volunteers will be opening Westow Cricket Club on Sunday, February 23, from 10am to 1pm. They will be serving tea, coffee, bacon rolls and home-baking to help raise money towards the running costs of the cricket club and pavilion. Everyone welcome.

Event - On Sunday, March 1, there will be an arts, crafts, collectables and afternoon tea event in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion, from noon to 3pm. There will be handmade items and original artwork on display and for sale. People can meet the artists/makers. Afternoon tea will be £8 per person in advance or £10 on the day. Cricket club AGM - Westow Cricket Club annual general meeting will take place on Friday, March 6, 7.30pm start as before.

Workshop - There will be a free RLSS Save a Baby’s Life workshop in Westow Cricket Pavilion on Tuesday, March 24. The workshop is aimed to give parents, parents to be, grandparents and anyone who cares for a baby the skills and confidence to deal with a baby emergency, including CPR and the treatment for choking. Film evening - The next film showing is on Saturday, February 29, in the village hall at 7pm. The film is Red Joan.

Domino drive - A domino drive will be held in the village hall on Saturday, February 29, in aid of hall funds. £1.50 to play includes tea and biscuits. The next drive is on Wednesday, March 4. Domino drives are held every last Saturday and every first Wednesday of the month.

WI MEETINGS

Thornton-le-Dale - The February meeting welcomed Julie Ryan who gave a fascinating talk on her attempts to swim the channel. Julie explained the training and dedication required to succeed with this challenge. She is now a member of York Safety Boat charity. Weather permitting there will be a walk around Pickering February 28. Those wishing to take part meet in Thornton Dale car park at 1.30pm. A calligraphy workshop will take place on Monday, March 9, places need to be pre-booked. Barbara Dransfield spoke on behalf of the Village Hall Committee with information relating to the open day on March 28, which will showcase photographs past and present of Thornton Dale. The next meeting is on March 10.
