A PHYSICAL therapy group has celebrated the birthday of one of its oldest members.

Brenda Sillito, who was 97, has attended the group at Malton Community Sports Centre for more than two years, alongside her daughter Vicky Matthews.

Brenda, who previously volunteered for the Women’s Land Army in the Second World War, credits her strength to a passion for gardening - specifically growing tomatoes.

“My mum has been attending the sessions for more than two years, making lots of friends and keeping healthy,” said Vicky. “Half the reason why my mum attends the session is the social aspect.”

In conjunction with the Malton Hospital, the sessions encourage gentle exercise for members who need support after physical therapy appointments. Starting with a warm-up, the group exercise at different stations, which includes smaller weights and resistant bands.

Alison Hyde, from the Malton Community Sports Centre, said: “Brenda is a lovely character who always brings a smile to our faces.

“After a recent survey, the majority of the group said how important the social element is.”
