APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall - Thanks to everybody who came to the Christmas Tea Party on December 28, which raised £240 for village hall funds. Also a big thank you to the organisers, caterers and to all who helped clear up and wash up afterwards. The village hall committee wishes everybody a Happy New Year.

Tea, Chat & History - There will be no Tea & Chat in January as it will be replaced on Saturday, January 25, by a Family History and Open Archive morning. The first Tea & Chat of 2020 will be on Monday, February 3, from 2pm to 4pm.

Event - A Family Research and Open Archive Day will take place at the village hall, from 10am to 1pm, on Saturday, January 25. There will be help with parochial family history research, as well as the village archive open for examination. Raffle and refreshments. Admission £1.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The Christmas tree festival is now drawing to a close. Thanks to visitors coming to see the decorated trees throughout December more than £275 was raised in additional donations. Due to public demand they hope to continue the now established tradition of this festival in 2020 and many of the decorators have started thinking of designs. The service at All Saints on Sunday, January 12, will be Matins at 11am. It will be taken by Dr Don Jones.

FARNDALE

Domino drive - The first domino drive of 2020 will be held in Farndale Village Hall, at 7pm, on Tuesday, January 14. All welcome, no experience necessary.

Yoga - Hatha Yoga in Farndale Village Hall, at 6pm, every Wednesday, restarts after Christmas break on January 8, teacher Lis Burnham. Everyone welcome.

Farndale calendar - A big thank you to everyone who purchased a 2020 Farndale Calendar in aid of Farndale Village Hall they have now all sold out.

GREAT EDSTONE

Service - At St Michael’s on Sunday, January 19, Holy Communion, at 11am, with the vicar Rev Mark Brosnan. Make Way service on Tuesday, January 28, at 7pm. If you enjoy singing you are most welcome to come along and join our small group.

HOVINGHAM

Methodist Chapel - The Methodist Chapel members in Hovingham invited friends from Slingsby, together with the Anglicans from both villages, for the important annual Covenant Service which was taken by Rev Ken Gowland at 10.30am. The readers was Carol Battersby and the organist Joyce Skelton. Refreshments were given at the close of the service. The Covenant Service is often described as Methodism’s liturgical gift to the ecumenical world.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive for an illustrated talk by club member Richard Burdon on The Art of Landscape Photography - A Practical Guide In How To Improve Your Landscape Photography from planning through to capture and beyond. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, January 16, when Paul Foster will be giving an illustrated talk on Natural History Photography.

Ladies Fellowship - The meeting to start the new year is on Wednesday January 15, and is a members’ evening. They meet in the library at 7.30pm.

Quiz - There is still time to complete the Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society Quiz Sheet out at the moment. All the questions relate to Christmas. Fifty question in total and entries have to be returned by January 31. Quiz sheets are available from local shops. The Moors Inn at Appleton-le-Moors has kindly donated the prize money. Tuesday Group - The meeting of the new year is on Tuesday, January 14, at 7.30pm, in the Jubilee Room in the Methodist Church. Janet will give an update on Riziki Orphanage. The leader is Ann and members Sonja and Audrey will be the tea hostesses.

Menzown - Members will meet Monday, January 13, at 7pm for 7.30pm, in the dining room of the King’s Head. Louise Mudd will give a presentation about Thomas Atkinson’s log of the 1774 sailing of “The Hope” from Whitby to the Arctic Davis Straits. 9pm. Bar. Menzown is a meeting for men. New members are welcome. First visit is free. Just turn up.

Memorial hall - Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall Committee is actively seeking new members. As a member of the committee you will be asked to attend one meeting each month (apart from August). Meetings usually last for about an hour. The current committee is committed to keeping the hall, and the Wednesday market, up and running for use by all of the residents of Kirkbymoorside and surrounding areas. Quiz sheet - The latest quiz sheet is available. This has become a regular feature of local life - although this may be the final quiz. A volunteer is sought to continue the custom. Quiz sheets are available from all the usual local businesses for £1 each - in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam.

Bridge club - Both teams secured victories in the Yorkshire League on Sunday, Malton A beating Scarborough 12-8 and Malton B winning 14-6 against Ilkley C. The club’s regular Wednesday and Thursday sessions resume this week.

Quiz - Sue’s Crew were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz at the Fleece Inn. The jackpot was a rollover.

SAWDON

Soup and Pudding Lunch - The December lunch went really well. It was very busy as they had a full house with loads of prizes donated for the raffle. They also had one very special visitor, Father Christmas, who came and entertained visitors fantastically. The very best wishes go to everyone for the New Year and thanks to all the group’s helpers. The next Community Lunch will be on Tuesday, January 14.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Carol Beswick and Enid Plevey were sidespersons, Dot Francis gave a bible reading, Jim Baird and Jean Donovan assisted with the distribution of communion, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Clare Firth and Laura Normandale served refreshments. On Sunday, January 12, there will be a new community church service in the Community Centre in Crossgates linked to the ministry of St Martin’s Church in Seamer. The service will start at 10.45am and is expected to last some 45 minutes. The worship will be welcoming and informal and all are invited to be part of this new venture for Crossgates. Refreshments will be served. The service will be held every second Sunday of the month at 10.45am.

SHERBURN

Luncheon Club - The next Luncheon club will be on Wednesday, January 15, when they will be celebrating the birthday party. All senior citizens are invited to go along from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport in Sherburn village can be arranged, just phone Christine on 01944 711294.

Messy church - On Saturday, January 11, members will meet at the Methodist Chapel to hear about the story of Creation. There will be stories, songs and of course lots of Messy craft. Meet for tea at 4.45pm.

St Hilda’s Church Roof Appeal - The tenders have now been received and the total cost for replacing the roof will be in the region of £45,000. The next service at St Hilda’s will be on Sunday, January 12, at 10.30am, led by Barbara Grice.

Next Steps Coffee Morning - Don’t sit at home alone. You are invited to join us at Sherburn Village Hall on Tuesdays from 9.30am and 11.30pm. Pop-in for a brew, cakes and a chat. Social activities provided too. Local free transport if needed.

Methodist News - The coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston and until Easter your kind donations for the coffee will be given to the St Hilda’s Parish Church Roof Fund. Please come along to support this venture for St Hilda’s. Craft Club resumes after its Christmas holiday on Thursday at 1.30pm. Just come along and enjoy a cuppa as you do your craft. Sunday Worship was the annual Methodist Covenant Service with Holy Communion led by the Minister Rev Bruce Russell. Steward was Liz Aconley and the Bible reading from Deuteronomy was given by Jean Brown. Communion Steward Kim Canterbury assisted Rev Bruce. Organist was Chris Cade and audio visual by Christine Fenwick. The service next week at 10.30am will be led by the Worship Team and all are invited.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - A vibrant Christmas concert was given by Allerston Aloud to close the 2019 session of the Sinnington People’s Guild. Led and conducted by Janet Magee, accompanied by Rosemary Knapton, the congregation thoroughly enjoyed the programme of familiar Christmas carols and songs. 12-year-old twins Lilian and Evelyn Plowright sang two duets in harmony, and joined their mother, who also sang a solo, in singing a trio. Stuart and Paul, playing his guitar, sang two duets. The evening concluded with supper. A collection for the work of the Leprosy Mission totalled £117.32. The choir was welcomed and thanked by Kay Metcalf. The next meeting is on Tuesday, January 14, at 7.15pm. The Thornton-le-Dale Friends will give a musical programme which will also be followed by supper.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Thornton-le-Dale Bridge results for December 30. In first position were Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth with 63.3 per cent. In second position were Lesley and Peter Jaram with 56.7 per cent.

Methodist Church - The Methodist Church Christmas Celebrations began on Saturday, December 14, when the Churches Together sang carols in the village followed by mince pies and coffee. At coffee break, they had carols and mince pies led by Rev Peter and Christine Sheasby, with readings and poems. Carols were accompanied by Betty on the piano. Sunday was the carol service led by Miss Ann Corner, readers were Mary, Pauline and Barbara. Christmas Day Rev Jane Pickering led the service, a number of visitors were given a welcome. John was organist at both services. The collection on Christmas Day was given to Action for Children, which amounted to £150 also £50 will be sent to Martin House Children’s Hospice from the Christmas card board. Fifty-three shoeboxes were sent, including 10 from the school. Thank you to all who supported this. Joyce Nellis has sent a cheque to Martin House Children’s Hospice for £325 from the sale of jam and marmalade. Thank you for the support.

WESTOW

Open house - The volunteers who usually open the Westow Cricket Pavilion, to serve tea, coffee, cake and bacon rolls each weekend between 10am and 1pm would like to thank everyone who popped in, baked cakes or helped in any way to make the weekend opening a success. They plan to re-start the weekend opening on Saturday, February 1, and look forward to seeing everyone again.
