AMPLEFORTH

Service - There will be a service on Sunday, December 15, at 11am, St Hilda’s: Eucharist.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Group - The history group curated a photographic display to celebrate the 50th anniversary of

the village hall on December 1. About 400 of photographs were on display as well as a rolling slide show of 500 pictures. More than 70 people attended the three-hour event. Refreshments were provided by Maggie Tebb and Shirley Brooke.

Christ Church - There will be a carol service on Tuesday, December 17, at 7pm.

Methodist Chapel - There will be a carol service with Mrs K Lane at 2pm on Sunday, December 15.

Film - There will be a film shown in the Reading Room on Sunday, December 22, at 7.15pm. They will kick-start Christmas with mince pies and mulled wine and a screening of Yesterday, the toe-tapping tribute to the Beatles.

BRANSDALE

Christmas Service - The Christmas Family Communion service will take place on Christmas Eve from 2.30pm at St Nicholas’ Church. There will not be a monthly service in January or February - these will be resumed on the first Sunday in March at 2.30pm.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - All Saints Church is now filled with Christmas trees decorated in many unique ways. As well as 39 3ft tall real trees there are three crafted made trees. Creativity this year by individuals, organisations and businesses has reached new heights. A group of pupils from Brompton and Sawdon Primary School attended the preview evening last Friday and their singing opened the festival. The primary school, along with Brompton Hall School pupils, the Ducklings toddlers group and the Brownies have all made decorations and dressed trees. The weekend continued with the church Christmas fair on Saturday and carol service on Sunday. Thanks are due to everyone in the community who put in so much effort for the whole weekend. The trees remain in place throughout December and there is a pottery bell for donations. As usual the church is open every day during daylight hours. The only times tree viewing is not possible is during services but, of course, anyone attending is welcome to stay and look before or afterwards. The service this Sunday, December 15 is at 9.30am. It will be Holy Communion taken by the Rev Tony Lindsay. There will be coffee afterwards at the back of church.

FARNDALE

Crib Service - A Crib Service will be held in St Mary’s Church on Christmas Eve, at 4pm.This service is particularly suitable for younger children, who may wish to bring a soft toy of the sort that may be found in the stable with them. The service will last for about 30 minutes and be followed by juice and biscuits.

Christmas Eve Service - A Christmas Eve communion Service will be held in St Mary’s Church Farndale at 7.30pm. Followed by light refreshments.

Christmas Eve Quiz - A general knowledge quiz in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice will be held in The Feversham Arms Inn, Church Houses, at 8pm, on Christmas Eve. Teams of four, entry £2 per person, quizmaster Mick Stanley, free buffet and raffle.

Calendar – The 2020 Farndale Calendar is now available from The Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, Lion Inn, Blakey and BATA, Kirkbymoorside, priced £6. All funds to Farndale Village Hall.

GILLING EAST

GREAT EDSTONE

Services - At St Michael’s on Sunday, December 15, Holy communion at 11am. Edstone sings sessions are going from strength to strength. Anyone who would like to join them will be made most welcome.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The result from Tuesday, December 3. North/South winners were Tony and Bo Simpson with 57.2 per cent. In joint second place Barry Smith and Bob Wardell and Peter Small and John Mortonson with 56.6 per cent. East /West winners were Ann Scott and Ian Oliver with 71.2 per cent. In second place Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 69.3 per cent. The last two pairs each bid and made a small slam.

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday at the Moorside Bar and Club for the annual monochrome competition which was judged by Mike Barnard, from Bridlington. The print section was won by Barrie Tuck with his image titled Muscovite. Runner-up was David Ireland with Male Impala. The projected digital image section was won by Iain Leadley with his image Morning Stretch. He was also runner-up with Angelic Gull. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, December 19, which will be an en-print competition and supper.

Quiz - Do you enjoy doing quiz sheets? Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society has a quiz sheet out at the moment, with all the questions relating to Christmas, to be returned by January 31. The Moors Inn at Appleton-le-Moors has kindly donated the prize money. Money raised helps to stage the open show held in the memorial. Concert - Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band Christmas Concert is on Sunday, December 22. Seasonal refreshments will be served in the band room from 6pm and the James Holt Concert Hall will be open for audience members from 6.45pm. Free admission with a retiring collection in aid of Kirkbymoorside Brownies and Rainbows.

Menzown - The next meeting will be the members’ Christmas Dinner at the King’s Head on Monday, December 16.

KIRKDALE

Quiz sheet - The latest quiz sheet is available. This has become a regular feature of local life - although this may be the final quiz. A volunteer is sought to continue the custom. Quiz sheets are available from all the usual local businesses for just £1 each – in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam. An ideal entertainment for the family over the Christmas holiday and an unusual mini-gift to send to other family members.

LEAVENING

Carol service - On Sunday, December 15, at 2.30pm (note not 10.30am as previously advertised), there will be a Christmas carol service in Leavening church. The service will be led by the Rev Peter Sheasby with the Buckrose Youth Choir. Mince pies will be served afterwards. There will be a Crib service at 10.30am on Sunday, December 22.

LOCKTON

Domino drive - The final domino drive of the year for the playing field will take place on Saturday, December 14, in Lockton Village Hall at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be provided.

MALTON

Bridge Club - Mike Jackson and Philip Mason took first place in last week’s positional pairs session at Malton Bridge Club, while there was a tie for second place between Tricia Pearce and Graeme Matthew and Derek Fox and Richard Hilton. In fourth position were Rob Ashdown and Annette Jackson. On Thursday there was a big win for Roger and Ruth Mattingly with a score of over 72 per cent. In the previous weekend’s Yorkshire League match, a corrected ruling meant that the match between Malton A and Leeds A was adjusted to a 10-10 draw.

MIDDLETON

Lunch - The 2nd Battalion Green Howards, Old Comrades held their annual Christmas lunch at Eden Camp, Old Malton. On behalf of the members and guests, thanks go to the management and staff for an excellent meal, remarks were made of the very friendly and efficient staff. After the meal a very interesting talk was given by Nick Hill, museum manager, about the history of Eden Camp from its begging to the present day.

OSWALDKIRK

PICKERING

Weekly draw - The numbers for week commencing December 2 for Pickering Town Football Club weekly draw were nine, one and 20 and the winner was Tommy Jones and there were two to share the monthly draw and they were Joan Bradley and Lynda Parks, next weeks pot will be £75.

Domino drive - Pickering Town Football Club has organised a domino drive on December 20 at

the Recreation Club, starting at 7.30pm.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the winners were Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown with 70.63 per cent. In second place with 56.35 per cent Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery. In third place June Greener and Terence Boyle with 54.86 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Collection - Jonathan would like to thank everyone who donated spectacles to his collection for

Vision Aid Overseas as part of his work for the Archbishop of York’s Youth Award Challenge at Malton School.

Service - A carol service will be held in St Andrew’s Church at 11am on Sunday.

Choir - Ryedale Rhythm Rascals children’s choir would like to invite you to a Christmas concert on Monday, December 23, at 5pm, in the church rooms. Admission is free and there will be light refreshments. However we will be collecting donations of items in support of the Salvation Army’s Moses Basket Appeal and Starter Pack Appeal. Useful items for pregnant mothers in need and for those families who have become homeless and are starting homes from nothing would be gratefully accepted.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Jim and Marion Baird were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and gave a bible reading, and Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. Sue Johnson and Enid Plevey served refreshments.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Christine Herbert. The vestry steward was Allan Dunnington, organist Doreen Lawson, welcomer Margaret Harris and the offering was taken by Sheila Grey. The service began with the lighting of the second Advent Candle. Bible readings were given by Jean Cockerill. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Patricia Mollon. There is no coffee morning on December 14.

SHERBURN

Village hall - Christmas Quiz on Thursday, December 19, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Teams of up to four people. Cost £2 per ticket which includes tea or coffee and a mince pie. There will also be a raffle. For tickets please contact Sue Pollard.

Stay and Play Group - A new stay and play group for under fives, mums, dads and carers, every Tuesday from 1pm to 2.30pm (during term time) at Sherburn Methodist Church, the cost for this session is £2 per family and includes a drink and snack for children.

Messy church - Saturday, December 14 - the place to be is Sherburn Chapel Hall because Messy Church will be having their Christmas Praise Party. Songs, stories and of course lots of messy craft. Meet for a party tea at 4.45pm.

St Hilda’s Church - Barbara Grice led Morning Worship. Music was supplied by Bill Hyndford and Christine Ashton read the lesson from Peter 2. Sidespersons were Sue Mennell and Carol Stephenson and coffee was served at the close of the service by Christine Ashton. “Sup and Sing” will be held at the East Riding On Monday, December 16, at 7pm, when everyone is invited to come along and join in their favourite carols. Music will again be supplied by Bill Hyndford and his grand-daughter Kayleigh will lead the singing. There will also be a raffle. The carol service at St Hilda’s is on Thursday, December 19, at 7pm. Martin Monkman will play the organ. Mince pies will be served at the close. Their will be the usual children’s nativity at the church on Christmas Eve, at 2pm, when everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun.

Senior Citizen Luncheon Club - The Christmas luncheon will take place on Wednesday, December 18. Please meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. After the meal, they will be singing some of their favourite carols and a certain red coated, bearded gentleman will be coming to visit. If you need transport in Sherburn Village just phone Christine on 01944 711294. This is open to all senior citizens. Grateful thanks go to the parish council for their generous grant to help finance this event.

Methodist news - Coffee morning on Tuesday was hosted by Pat Woodley and until Christmas your kind donations for coffee continue to be given to fund the transport for the shoeboxes. This year they have gone to Liberia. The Holy Communion Service was led by Rev Mary Jackman. After Worship they enjoyed coffee together in the hall. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Christine Fenwick assisted by the Worship Team and all are welcome to come along.

SHERIFF HUTTON

Market - The village Christmas market takes place on Sunday, December 15, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, at Sheriff Hutton Village Hall. It is free to enter and, in addition to more than 50 stalls selling fresh and local produce, there will be music from Easingwold Brass Band, a festive outdoor mulled wine bar, and Father Christmas will be in his grotto giving children some early Christmas presents. This month the market café will be run by Sheriff Hutton History Group and there will be a new outdoor dog-friendly café area. This is the final event of Sheriff Hutton Village Market’s first year and throughout 2019 the café alone will have raised more than £5,000 for local groups and projects. They look forward to seeing as many people as possible for some pre-Christmas cheer. More information is available from shvm.co.uk

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Sinnington People’s Guild welcomed the Rev Dr Lynn Grove on Tuesday, December 3. Lynn led the Guild into Advent by focusing on Zechariah and Joseph. Jill Simpson thanked Lynn for her challenging message. John Woodmancey was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is a Christmas musical evening to be be given by Allerston Aloud, on Tuesday, December 17, at 7.15pm. Supper to follow. There is no charge but a collection will be taken for a charity.

STONEGRAVE

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Results for December 2 were: in first position were Mary Mortonson and Lynda Lockwood with 63.9 per cent; in second position were Tim Johnson and Ruth Hunt with 62.5 per cent.

Ladies Group - The December meeting was Christmas themed with songs and recitations from Ken and Nancy Allanson, followed by a faith tea. The next meeting is rescheduled for January 9 at the Methodist Schoolroom, at 2pm, when the speaker will be Val Payne talking about Adoption. They will be collecting any remaining 5ps then, and taking names and payment for the annual lunch on March 5.

Church - All Saints’ Church had two stalls at the village hall Christmas fair on Saturday, December 7. The church had a successful afternoon when £500 was raised from a Christmas produce stall, a mystery tombola, guess the birthday of the toy dog competition and a grand Christmas raffle. Many thanks to the sponsors of the raffle, including Pace Bikes, Brandysnap Bistro, Moore’s Deli, Cedar Barn, Wardell’s, Lavender’s, Balderson’s and Clothes 4 Comfort. Thank you to all who supported the event. Proceeds were raised for church funds and Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team.

WESTOW

Open house - It was good to see so many people popping in to Westow Cricket Club pavilion over the last weekend. By 1pm on Sunday, December 8, the volunteers had sold out of orange cake, mince pies and bacon for the rolls. The volunteers will be opening the doors again on December 14 and 15 to serve tea, coffee, bacon rolls, mince pies and slices of cake. As usual there will be second hand books available by donation. All the money taken will be used towards the running costs of the pavilion and cricket club.

Social - There will be be a Christmas social evening on Friday, December 20, in Westow Cricket pavilion, from 7pm. There will be tea, coffee available, alongside the licensed bar. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. Westow Cricket Club will be holding their annual Christmas Draw at 9pm. There are lots of prizes, including Christmas cakes, pork pies, vouchers, Christmas hamper, chocolates, biscuits and other Christmas fayre.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - A domino drive to be held in the village hall on Saturday, December 28, at 7.30pm. £1.50 to play includes tea and biscuits. Raising funds for the hall.

Film matinee - The next film matinee is on Friday, December 29, at 2pm, in the village hall showing Oliver.

Artists - Local artists who comprise the Moorlands Art Group and who meet in the Wombleton Village Hall, presented the hall with a framed watercolour by artist Bill Campbell-Trotter. The presentation was to commemorate Bill’s achievement in promoting amateur art in the Helmsley area. Recently deceased but well-loved by many, Bill’s painting depicts Sutton Bank, a well-known local viewing point in the North York Moors National Park.

WI MEETINGS

Snainton - President Angela Howgate welcomed members and guests and special guests Thornton Dale Ukelele band. A short amount of business was discussed. The holiday to Derbyshire is now open to friends and relatives to fill the coach. Members were reminded that subs of £43 were due next month. Several items of interest were looked at in the newsletter. The Christmas lunch will be on Thursday, December 12, at the Coachman Inn, Snainton. The band then began the festive entertainment. They had members all joining in with tambourines, maracas and kazoos and also singing some well-known old favourites. The roof was well and truly raised, a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience for all in attendance. Supper was provided by all members and the table was full of treats, savoury and sweet. The competition for a table decoration was won by Christine Robinson, second was Marilyn Bellinger and third Kay Clyde. The New Year party will be held on Tuesday, January 7, with a poetry and prose evening.

YCA MEETINGS

Rillington - Members held their Christmas Dinner at the Dawnay Arms, West Heslerton. Fifteen members and one guest were present. Simon, the landlord judged the competition for the most attractively wrapped parcel and awarded first prize to Sue Butler, second was Marjorie Grice and third Jennie Ireland. Sue Butler thanked Simon and his staff for an excellent meal and wished members a happy Christmas.
