FOUR children have raised more than £600 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after it landed to help an injured child.

Emily, 11, and Jack, nine, Scott, alongside Megan, 11, and Joseph, eight, Mills promised to fundraise for the charity after it landed in Barton-le-Street during the summer holidays.

Cpt Harry O’Neil showed the children around the helicopter and they decided to do a sponsored cycle ride, riding more than 24 miles.

The youngsters asked their family, friends and neighbours for donations.

Helen Scott, mother of Emily and Jack, said: “We are extremely proud of the children; they fundraised so independently.

“We live in a small village where everyone knows each other, so they were able to go and ask for donations.”

The children cycled along the Cinder Track, an old railway line connecting Scarborough to Whitby.

The route begins at Scarborough and passes through Burniston, Scalby, Staintondale, Ravenscar, Robin Hood’s Bay and finishes at Whitby.

As the family approached Robin Hood’s Bay, the older children and their dad’s continued the ride down along the track to Whitby.

The children and their families reached the end of the track before nightfall and celebrated with a fish and chip supper in Whitby.

Kevin Hutchinson, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s East Yorkshire community fundraiser, said: “It is great to see children being inspired to fundraise for charities and £600 is an incredible amount of money to raise, they should be incredibly proud of themselves.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to Emily, Megan, Jack and Joseph and their friends, families and neighbours for their generosity and support.

“The £600 that they have raised will help greatly towards the vital running costs of our service.”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is an independent charity which needs £4.4 million per year to keep both of the air ambulances in the air and maintained.

Providing a rapid response emergency service 365 days a year across four million acres of Yorkshire, over 8,000 patients have been carried to relevant treatment centres.

The children and their families would like to thank family, friends and residents of Barton-le-Street who supported their sponsored bike ride.
