ACKLAM

Evensong - There is to be a traditional evensong at 6pm on Sunday, October 13, in the Church of St John the Baptist in Acklam.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Community Energy CIC - The company’s AGM was held on Friday. A total of 16 bags have been supplied to the community, plus another 25 have been processed. There is about 100 tons of felled and stacked timber to be processed. A small loss was made during the year although the company’s balance sheet remained healthy. Work Task by volunteers had continued throughout the year the major felling work has been completed.

Singalong - The next singalong will be held in the village hall at 5pm on Wednesday, October 16.

Village Hall - The theatre group visit of Nick Darke’s “Landmark” will be on November 17. Tickets are now available for £8.50 from Helen. The village hall 50th year anniversary celebration will take place on November 30 with a buffet supper prepared by The Moors Inn with dancing afterwords. Free event. The annual barbecue raised nearly £400 for village hall funds.

Methodist Chapel - The Methodist chapel was full for the harvest festival on Sunday. The service was taken by Rosamund Dyson from Scarborough and Barrie Richmond from Ravenshead. Musical items were by Linda and Gerry Starling who sang and played their ukeleles. John Lane also gave a solo on his saxaphone. The collection taken by Jill Hiatt and Malcolm Leckenby together with donations amounted to £280 for chapel funds. After the service everyone was invited to Weighell Cottage for refreshments. All donated harvest produce was taken by Rosamund to the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough.

AYTON

Village hall - Sunday, October 20, from 9am to noon, table top sale, £5 per table, free entry to the public, refreshments available. To book a table, phone Bev on 01723 865033. BROMPTON

Local History Society - At the meeting of the society on October 3, following the AGM, the title of Brian Walker’s talk was Hop, Skip and a Nice Felt Hat. Brian, who was the wildlife officer for the local Forestry Commission, told the group about the extensive rabbit warrens in the area. At the next meeting Brian Mulvana will tell members about another major industry which has vanished –watermills. The meeting is at the village hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 6.

Heritage Weekend - This event took place over the weekend of September 28 and 29 and central to it was an archaeological dig on Castle Hill, carried out by members of Scarborough Archaeological Society, lead by Chris Hall, Trevor Pearson and Marie Wood. In the village hall, an exhibition of photos, research and artefacts was put on display. Many thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to the event.

Community Lunch - The next Village Ventures Community Lunch will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, October 16, at 12.30pm.

Spoken Word Evening - Once again Bob Muir organised a great night of renditions from the Supporters of Brompton’s Spoken Word evening. Friday nights readers were Bob and Marylyn Muir, Lynne Heaton, Marcel Guillou, Steve Spencer, Wendy Banner, Leslie Hodgson, Graham Bull, Mark Evans, John Hazelwood, Pamela Shaw Johnson, Mary Jones, Hilary Triffitt, John Wallis, Anne Pilgrim Green and Norman Green.

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday, October 13, will be harvest festival, starting at 6pm. It will be taken by Venerable David Garnett. There will be supper, at no charge in the church to follow for everyone who wishes to stay. Donations for the Rainbow Centre will be welcome.

BULMER

Bridge club - The results of Thursday, October 3, bridge evening are 1st Brian Crowder and Chris Calvert 58.3 per cent; 2nd John and Anne Prest 57.9 per cent.

BURYTHORPE

Illustrated talk - On October 18, there is an illustrated talk on the history of Burythorpe House at 6.30pm in Burythorpe House Hotel. Raising money in for the Burythorpe Bell Tower Appeal. Tickets are £15 and include supper and are available from 01653 658200, although limited, so early booking is advised.

CROPTON

Coffee morning - The October coffee morning was very well attended. Coffee and cakes were served by committee members and friends. The Malton Male Voice Choir entertained the audience in the village hall. A most enjoyable evening.

FARNDALE

Festival and Supper – The harvest festival service will be held at St Mary’s at 7pm on October 11, followed by a harvest supper in the village hall and 12 hands of dominoes.

Macmillan coffee afternoon – On Saturday, October 19, there will be a coffee morning in the afternoon for Macmillan. If you want to have a cake and a cuppa come to Farndale Village Hall where you can donate, from 2pm to 4pm. Bring the children too as there are games and things to do - tombola, guess the sweeties in the jar, etc. Bring a cake, or just come along.

Charity evening – The annual charity country and western evening, in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, will take place at the Lion Inn, Blakey, on Friday, November 1, at 7pm. GREAT EDSTONE

Church Services - Holy Communion, Sunday, October 20, at 11am, with the vicar Rev Mark Brosnan.

Edstone Sings - The group meets again on Wednesday, October 16, at 7.30pm, in the church. If you enjoy singing, go along and join in. An informal occasion to sing hymns, spirituals and songs.

HELMSLEY

Ladies Luncheon Club - Members met for the first meeting of 2019-2020 at The Pheasant Hotel in Harome. They meet on the first Wednesday of each month between October and June. They welcome you to come and be a guest for a meeting. The cost is £20 for a two-course meal, including tea or coffee. The food was excellent and the staff make members very welcome. The group also have a speaker. This month it was the Right Reverend David Wilbourne. David was thanked by the president Mrs E Wilson and Mrs V Moorby. The Right Reverend David Wilbourn kindly donated his fee for the talk to Christian Aid.

Supper - A fish and chip supper will be held at the Feathers Hotel, Helmsley, on Thursday, October 24, at 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets £12, includes supper and tea/coffee. Raffle and Christmas Cards on sale. Proceeds to RNLI Helmsley branch.

HOVINGHAM

Meeting - Hovingham Women’s Fellowship met in the village hall last Tuesday to listen to James Greig’s illustrated talk about The Leprosy Mission.

Market - The 10th anniversary of the Hovingham Village Market was held on Saturday with a record turnout of visitors for October. The market was officially opened by Sir William Worsley, who cut the tape under a very impressive arch of balloons. A poem about the market, written by the artist Patrick Smith was read and the chocolate birthday cake, depicting a market stall, was made by stall holder Jayne Harrow. The cake was cut up at the end and gratefully appreciated by all the stall holders and volunteers. The RNLI community stall did a roaring trade with Christmas cards and professional photographer Lucy Saggars took pictures, as the stall holders set up their stalls. The cafe, run by Scackleton Church, was very busy and Josh the busker was in fine voice. The next market, which is always on the first Saturday of the month, will be on Saturday, November 2.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The result from October 1. North/South winners were Judith O’Donnell and David Whitehead with 57.5 per cent, in second place Anne Scott and Graeme Matthew with 51.7 per cent. East/West winners were Tim and Lesley Vessey with 58.3 per cent, in second place Clarissa Napier and Chris Brett with 56.2 per cent. Two pairs bid and made small slams.

Menzown - Members of Menzown meet on Monday, October 14, at 7pm, for 7.30pm in the dining room of the King’s Head. There will be “What’s in a name?” - rediscovering old words and phrases with Malton Museum. New members welcome. First visit is free.

Tuesday Group - At their meeting on Tuesday, October 22, at the Methodist Church Jubilee Room, the subject is Traidcraft at 40. They give a warm welcome to members of the Pickering group who will be joining the meeting. Leader is Anne and members will be the tea hostesses.

Coffee morning - The ever-popular coffee morning at Ryedale Garage is on Friday, October 11, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. There will be coffee and biscuits, tombola, raffle and cake stall, along with Marie Curie Christmas cards for sale. All proceeds to Marie Curie cancer care.

Dinner club - You would be most welcome to join the Wednesday dinner club held at the Methodist Church. They welcome older people and those living alone to join them for a three-course meal at a reasonable price. Phone 01751 432111 for further information.

Macmillan Coffee Morning - Sue Mintoft would like to say a big thank you to those who supported her Macmillan coffee morning, those who came along, made a donation or baked a cake. The wonderful sum of just over £500 was raised.

LEAVENING

Harvest auction - It was a brilliant night at the annual Leavening Harvest Auction, held in the Jolly Farmer public house on Friday, October 4. The sale of home baking, produce, other items and a raffle raised a total of £790. The raffle raised £150 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. A total of 640 from the auction is to be divided three ways for Leavening and Acklam churches. The organisers would like to thank everyone who donated items, helped in any way or went along to support the event.

MALTON

Bridge club - Philip Mason and Annette Jackson won the first session of Malton Bridge Club’s Championship Pairs with 68 per cent. Also scoring well were Mike Jackson and Matt Brash (67.3 per cent), John Hayton and Derek Fox (64.8 per cent), Ed Robinson and Dave Massey (59.5 per cent) and Graeme Matthew and Madge Allison (59 per cent). This week sees the start of the Positional Pairs and the resumption of the Thursday afternoon social sessions. PICKERING

Concert - Keep The Home Fires Burning - a Sunday afternoon concert will take place on October 13, at 3pm, in the United Reform Church, Hungate, Pickering. It will be presented by actor Ian Jervis and soprano Charlotte Spink. There will be the words of Churchill and Eisenhower, eye-witness reports and songs made famous by Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields and Marlene Dietrich. Entry is free, but donations for the NYMR will be greatly received. Refreshment available.

Draw - The numbers for Pickering Town Football Club’s weekly draw for the week commencing September 30, were 38, 30 and five. There were no winners therefore the pot for next week will be £150.

Dogs Trust - The annual Dogs Trust coffee morning will take place on Saturday, November 16, at the RVS Centre in Pickering, 10am to noon. There will be a cake stall, bric a brac, tombola, raffle, hand made crafts and knitting. Entrance is £1, which includes tea/coffee and cake. Any contributions for the stalls would be very much appreciated.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the winners were Dorothy Cordery and Sue Hardman with 66.25 per cent. In second place with 61.25 per cent, Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery. In third place Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough 56.25 per cent.

RIEVAULX

Service - Services of thanksgiving for the harvest are being held at Rievaulx Methodist Church this weekend. On October 13, the All Age Worship at 10.30am will be led by Alan and Ruth Woodhouse from Lancashire. During the morning All Age Worship service gifts of fruit, vegetables, etc will be received. The evening worship at 6.30pm will also be led by Alan and Ruth Woodhouse. The services will be continued on October 15, at 7pm, when the thanksgiving service will be led by John and Sheila Bainbridge from Richmond. After the service there will be a harvest supper in the village hall followed by the sale of produce. A half of this year’s sale proceeds will be given to Water Aid. The remaining half will go to the Mercy Ships.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Six teams playing for £52 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 60.5 points were Honeymooners, second were Gary, Steve and Co (58.5) and third Team @ the Bar (57.5). The winners of the £14 jackpot were The Who. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz will be on Friday, October 18. Sue’s Crew were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was a rollover.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and the Rev Judith Dean assisted at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Judith preached the sermon. Frances Simons gave a bible reading, Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion and also with Marion Baird was a sidesperson. Clare Firth served refreshments.

Friends of Seamer Village - Advance notice of a family bingo afternoon at the Memorial Hall Seamer on Saturday, October 19, from 2pm to 4pm. Admission £2.50 per adult, under 12 free and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments included in the ticket price.

SHERBURN

Craft Fair - A craft fair will be held at Sherburn Methodist Church on Saturday, October 19, from 11am to 3pm. Hand-made items by the Sherburn Craft Club, plus cakes, plants, preserves, jewellery and bric a brac. Proceeds will be for Water Aid and St Catherine’s Hospice.

Messy Church - This will meet in the Methodist Chapel on Saturday, October 12, when we will be hearing about a little boy who shared his packed lunch. They will dong craft work, including getting messy by painting stones to put around the village. Meet for tea at 4.45pm.

Club - Senior Citizen Luncheon club will meet on Wednesday, October 16, in the Chapel Hall. Special entertainment after the meal will be provided by Allerston Aloud. Meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport can be arranged in Sherburn Village, just phone Christine on 01944 711294.

St Hilda’s Church - The next service will be Morning Worship, led by Barbara Grice on Sunday, October 13, at 10.30am. On Thursday, October 17, at 7pm, the Harvest Festival will take the form of a Celebration and Thanksgiving, not only for the harvest, but also all the other occupations and activities which take place in the village. This will be followed by cheese and wine, there will be non-alcoholic drinks also available. Sunday, October 20, is the Joint Service at the Methodist Church at 10.30am.

Methodist News - Tuesday Coffee Morning were delighted to welcome Philip and Denise Richardson and a cheque for £230 for Water Aid was presented to Denise in memory of her mother Pamela Wild. Hostess Pat Woodley presented the cheque on behalf of the coffee and chat folk. Currently, kind donations for coffee are being given to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Thursday Craft Club continue their preparations for their Craft Fair on October 19. The Holy Communion Service was led by Rev Bruce Russell assisted by Kim Canterbury. The reading was given by Liz Aconley. Offertory steward was Jean Brown and the audio visual by Christine Fenwick. After Worship coffee was enjoyed in the hall. Next Sunday at 10.30am the worship Team will lead a Songs of Praise.

Christmas Shoeboxes - Thank you to those who have already been so generous to the appeal. They still need toiletry items of soap and toothbrushes. Toys, hair slides and bobbles, combs and small soft cuddly toys. They can now accept hand-knitted toys as long as they are stuffed safely. Hats and mittens would be welcome but they have enough scarves. They have plenty of notebooks but felt pens and colouring pencils, rubbers, pencil sharpeners and rulers would be most welcome. Thanks to a very generous donation they have enough tennis balls for every child to have one. They have been given a thimble collection. These will be on display at the coffee morning and you invited to choose what you would like and give a donation for the Shoebox appeal. SHERIFF HUTTON

Fair - The Sheriff Hutton History Fair will take place on Saturday, October 26, from noon to 4pm, at the village hall. A number of history groups and societies from around Yorkshire will be at the event. The Sheriff Hutton group will be showing the research they have been involved with offering a view of the Archive Community store. The fair opens at noon with short presentations by some of the group members and later on during the day, by kind permission of the owner, it will be possible for groups of up to 12 people at a time to visit the castle, which is privately owned and not open to the public. There will be a small charge for this towards the maintenance of this historic building. Entry at the door is £2 and refreshments will be available throughout day.

STONEGRAVE

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The result from September 30. In first place with 61.1 per cent were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell. In second place with 56.3 per cent were Pat and George Donnor.

Ladies Group - Due to a late speaker cancellation, members held a Beetle Drive at the October meeting. The winner was Sue Ford, and it was followed by tea and biscuits. The next meeting is on November 7, at 2pm, in the Methodist Schoolroom, when Mr G Clitheroe will be speaking and showing photos of Ryedale villages and people.

WEAVERTHORPE

Jumble sale - There will be a jumble sale on Saturday, October 12, from 1pm to 2.30pm, at the village hall. Admission is £1 for adults, including a drink and biscuit. Accompanied children free. Jumble can be donated on Friday, October 11, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, or from 11.30am on October 12. Sorry no electrical items. Proceeds to be divided between Weaverthorpe village organisations.

WESTOW

Church services - Every Wednesday morning throughout October there is to be a Traditional Holy Communion at 10am in the Church of St Mary in Westow. Everyone welcome.

120 club - Westow Playing Fields Association is continuing its 120 Club over the coming year to raise funds to help maintain the play area in Westow. As well as paying out £600 in prize money to the lucky winners, the 120 Club makes a valuable contribution to the funds needed every year to pay for the upkeep, essential maintenance and the ever increasing costs of insurance at the Westow play area. There will be 120 numbers for sale at a cost of £12 each and all of the numbers will be entered into twelve monthly draws throughout the year. For 11 of the draws there will be three prizes. One of £25, one of £10 and one of £5. At the Christmas draw the prizes will increase to £100, £50 and £10. It is intended that the first draw will take place in October. Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club is collecting old/unwanted clothes, shoes, belts, hats, bags, bedding and curtains in aid of cricket club funds on Saturday, October 19. Items donated will be sold by weight, with the money going towards the running costs of the cricket club. Cross stitch - Westow Cricket Club has been given a number of books relating to cross stitching to sell in aid of the pavilion and cricket club. Anyone interested in purchasing any of the books, should go to the cricket pavilion any Saturday or Sunday, from 10am to 1pm.
