STAFF at a building society in Malton have raised £1,274 for charity in memory of a former colleague who died five years ago.

Lucy Copland, who worked at Skipton Building Society in Malton, was famous for her carrot cake when the branch hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning.

In October 2014, 28-year-old Lucy, who was eight months pregnant at the time, collapsed at home in Malton. She was rushed by hospital but they were unable to save her or her unborn son.

Aylish Carter-Rigg, a customer relationship consultant at the Malton branch, said: “Lucy contributed so much towards the local community, especially the elderly.

“We spoke to Lucy’s family, who agreed supporting Ryedale Carers Support and hosting a bake sale was the perfect way to honour her memory.”

The Malton team hosted a bake sale with a variety of different cakes and a Pick A Square Game, with all the proceeds supporting the elderly and combating loneliness in Ryedale.

Aylish said: “Everyone is really chuffed with the amount of money raised, we never expected to make so much.

“Ryedale Carers Support goes a long way in helping the elderly and lonely.

“They have moved from Amotherby as they out grew their premises, as their songs and scones is such a big hit with the local community.

“We want to thank everyone who donated money and bought a cake or square – it means a lot.”

Claire Hall, the chief officer from Ryedale Carers Support, said the money would go towards the running of their songs and scones meeting, which is held at Malton Rugby Club on a monthly basis.

Ryedale Carers Support is a local voluntary organisation and registered charity that provides practical and emotional help for carers, the people they care for and older people living on their own.

The service is provided by volunteers who can visit weekly, fortnightly or monthly for a couple of hours. For more information, visit ryedalecarers.org.uk.
