Harvest thanksgiving - On Sunday, September 29, at 6pm, in there will be a harvest thanksgiving service in the Church of John the Baptist in Acklam. Everyone is warmly invited.

Harvest Supper - The Harvest Supper for the Parish of West Buckrose with Canon John Manchester is to be held on Friday, October 4, in Settrington Village Hall. Tickets are £8 and are available from all the churchwardens within the villages of the parish.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Wildlife event - Visitors were treated to a fascinating array of information stands in the village hall during the Wildlife event in the village hall on Sunday. Stallholders included Butterflies and Moths - North and East Yorkshire, Scarborough Field Naturalists Society, Yorkshire Dragonfly Group, East Yorkshire Rivers Trust, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Pickering Hedgehog Rescue, Turtle Dove Project, Eco Living Ideas, North Yorkshire Police Wildlife Crime Officers, Brompton Butts Habitat Management Group and Sawdon Community Nature Reserve. In addition to this, people were also able to listen to speakers on a variety of topics: Allan Rodda spoke about moths and butterflies, Keith Gittens on dragonflies, Nick Gibbons on Bats and Dave Southall on river fly invertebrates. The event was well supported and visitors were able to enjoy a wildlife themed tea of foot sandwiches, bat shaped biscuits and amazing butterfly cakes. Entrance to the event was a free one but any profits made on the day will go towards the Butts Habitat Management Fund. The event was organised by Alison Tubbs and a willing band of volunteers.

Spoken Word Evening - This celebration of words will take place on Friday, October 4, at 7.30pm, in the village hall. Tickets priced at £7, to include a pie and pea supper, are available from Bob and Marylyn Muir on 01723 850412, or on the evening at the door. Do come and support this event - it is always very enjoyable.

Heritage weekend - ‘Step into Brompton’s Past’ throughout the weekend of September 28 and 29. The village hall will be open from noon to 4pm offering a display of archive material featuring buildings in Brompton and the people who have lived and worked in them. This display is part of an ongoing heritage project in the village and an opportunity to share memories. On Castle Hill, an archaeological excavation will be taking place revealing an historic building hidden from sight for centuries. Visitors will be able to see the results of this during three guided public site visits at 11am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm and they will have the chance to talk to the people in charge of the dig. In addition to this visits to the church can take in a display about the stained glass windows and have a guided tower tour. While there visitors will be able to see and hear the bell ringers in action and perhaps have a go themselves. The Sir George Cayley Workshop will also be open from 11am to 4pm, featuring displays relating to Sir George Cayley’s invention of the first man carrying flying machine and information about his other inventions. There will be refreshments available throughout both afternoons to keep you going while you explore all the sites. Books about the history of the village will be on sale and village heritage trail maps suitable for both adults and children, will be available to aid an exploration of the village. Church - Sunday, September 29, is a fifth Sunday in the month so the church service is a combined one for the Benefice. This month it is at St Michael and All Angels Church, Snainton, at 10.30am. It will be of Holy Communion and include the dedication of their renovations.

BULMER

FARNDALE

Harvest auction – There will be a harvest auction with Chris Clubley Auctioneers, in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance and St Catherine’s Hospice, at the Feversham Arms Inn on October 4, at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Domino drive – The autumn winter domino drive season started at 7pm on Tuesday, October 8, in Farndale Village Hall, and will continue until March on the second Tuesday of each month. Everyone welcome.

Harvest festival and supper – The annual harvest festival service will be held at St Mary’s Farndale at 7pm on Friday, October 11, followed by a harvest supper in the village hall and 12 hands of dominoes.

Farndale calendar – The 2020 Farndale Calendar is now available from The Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, Lion Inn, Blakey and BATA, Kirkbymoorside, priced £6 all funds to Farndale Village Hall.

GILLING EAST

Eco Fair - On Saturday, September 28, there will be an Eco Fair running from 1pm until 4pm at Gilling East Village Hall. Stalls holders include alternative energy suppliers, Ryedale Environment Group, Ampleforth Plus, North Yorkshire Rotters and eco-friendly sales. Harvest Festival - Hartoft Methodist Chapel is having a Harvest Service on Sunday, September 29, at 2.15pm. The preacher will be Katrina Lane. The Harvest Festival Service will be on Wednesday, October 2, at 7pm, led by John Foster of Rievaulx, followed by an auction of produce and supper. All welcome.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz at the Crown Inn, Hutton-le-Hole, on Sunday, October 6, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown, in aid of St Chad’s Church.

LEAVENING

Harvest auction - The annual Leavening Harvest auction is to be held on Saturday, October 5, in the Jolly Farmer public house from 8pm onwards. Donations of fruit and vegetables and home baking will be gratefully received and can be dropped off at the pub during the day or taken along in the evening.

MALTON

Parish news - The harvest table in aid of CAFOD will take place at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church on September 28 and 29. Please bring along any produce from those who would like to contribute to this on these dates. Harvest Fast Day this year is on Friday, October 4.

Christmas fair - The CAFOD group is beginning to prepare for the Christmas fair on November 30 and December 1. Labelled plastic containers are now in church for those who would like to contribute any candles or crafts for this event.

Bridge club - Dave Sonley and Charlie Callis had a good win in the last of Malton Bridge Club’s summer sessions. Ruth Mattingly and Gladys Thompson took second place with Anthony and Moira Brown third and Tricia Pearce and Beryl Bramall fourth. Over the whole summer the players with the best average positions were Richard Hilton, Charlie Callis, Derek Fox and Dave Sonley. This Wednesday is the club’s AGM followed by a shortened bridge session, while the Thursday afternoon “social” sessions resume on October 10.

Flower club - The AGM of Malton and District Flower Club took place in September. The chairman reported that it had been another successful year with a varied programme, including demonstration, talks, workshops and practice classes.The 2018-2019 winners were: Novice - Chrysa Apps; Intermediate - Lorna Mastagliano; Lower Advanced - Kay Clyde; Advanced - Barbara Adamson; Gold Advanced - Jillian Swiers, Lynn Dees and Sally Goodrick. A demonstration by award-winning Carys Matthews, followed the AGM and was entitled, Gauchos and Gringos. This was based on her holiday experiences in South America. Her creations were both traditional and temporary, using garden and exotic flowers plus more alternative materials and some reflecting the season. The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 15, and features a demonstration by Audrey Foster, entitled Coast to Coast. All meetings are now held at the rugby club. Service - The Harvest Thanksgiving Services will be held at Bethel Methodist Church this coming weekend. The Harvest Family Praise Service will be held on Sunday, September 29, at 10.45am. At 6pm, evening worship will be led by Rev Jane Pickering. On Monday, September 30, at 7.30pm, there will be a service of Praise and Thanksgiving. This will be followed by a Harvest Supper and Sale. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Surgery - Kirkbymoorside Surgery walking group has re-started after the summer break. The free walking group is led by local fitness instructor Toni Lamb. The group meet in the surgery waiting room on a Wednesday at 9.30am. The walks are suitable for all ages and fitness levels and are for no more than one hour around Kirkbymoorside. The group are supportive and welcoming so whether you are a regular walker, you would like to feel less isolated, or you’d just like to get moving a little more then please come and join us as you would be most welcome. Christmas Market - Early date for your diary. Saturday, November 30, this friendly event will once again be held. The usual popular children’s activities in the library, face painting, Santa’s Grotto and not least the Kirkbymoorside Brass Band have all been booked. There will be more than 30 craft, handicraft and produce stalls. The event will run from 10am to 3pm.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 8, at 7.30pm, in the Methodist Chapel, when they will meet up with the Tuesday Group. This is an annual get-together which they all enjoy and this year it will be the Ladies Fellowship members who will be providing the faith supper. Norma Davy will be the guest speaker. History Group - It is an evening of Yorkshire dialect, humour and tales with Adam Collier on Friday, October 4, at 7pm, in the Methodist Chapel, Kirkbymoorside. Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in Lockton Village Hall on Saturday, October 12, at 7.30pm with proceeds going to St Giles Church. Refreshments will be provided and everyone is very welcome.

PICKERING

Exhibition - John Paul is holding an exhibition at Pickering Library for two weeks, from September 16. It is a display of writing, pictures and poetry written during and after the circumnavigation he undertook in 1978/90 aboard a self-built yacht with a recruited local crew who contributed to the cost of the voyage. His objective was to follow the course round the world of the Endeavour and James Cook, in which he succeeded. The second half of the exhibition showcases what John Paul did during three school terms in 1972 when he taught at Middleton Road Primary. Many of the pupils will be grandparents now so it will be interesting to see how many recall the adventures walking the moors, discovering fossils in a local quarry and bringing many nautical specimen back from Burniston Bay. He will also be offering the remainder of the books he wrote about sailing and his early beginnings all at less than one third of the correct price; the proceeds to be divided between John Paul and the library.

Library - Ryedale Family History Group is encouraging anyone wanting to delve into their ancestry to go along to free one-to-one sessions at Pickering library. The first sessions will be held on Tuesday, October 8, to coincide with Libraries Week 2019, which runs from October 7 to 12. The three further dates are: Tuesday, October 22; Tuesday, November 5; and Tuesday, November 19. Group members will use online resources to find out more about where you came from and how your ancestors lived. One-to-one sessions will be held on each date at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. St Martin’s Church - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion and in addition accompanied the hymns on his guitar. Clare Firth and Frances Symonds were welcomers, Enid Plevey gave a bible reading and Clare and Jean Fielder served refreshments. Rev Andrew led and preached again at the 11am modern service of Holy Communion. Reader Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and assisted with the chalice, and Elizabeth Bradley read. Richard Fuller led the powerful sung worship with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club. Elizabeth Bradley was the welcomer and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Harvest celebrations - St Martin’s harvest celebrations begin this Saturday with a ceilidh at Memorial Hall Seamer at 6pm. Scarborough-based, the Bedlam Band will be playing. For details see the St Martin’s Seamer Facebook page. On Sunday, September 29, there will be a harvest celebration service held, as usual, in the Gardeners’ Restaurant at Irton Garden Centre. The service starts at 9.30am. All welcome.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Rev Dr Kevin Ridd. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward Bob Jackman and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Tina Greenley. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Martin Calver.

SHERBURN

Craft fair - A craft fair will be held at Sherburn Methodist Church on Saturday, October 19, from 11am to 3pm. Hand-made items by the Sherburn Craft Club plus cakes, plants, preserves, jewellery and

bric-a-brac. Proceeds will be for Water Aid and St Catherine’s Hospice.

St Hilda’s Parish Church - The Holy Communion Service was led by Rev Joe Kinsella. Sidespersons were Betty Flinton and Keith Usher. The organist was Martin Monkman and the Bible Reading was by Margaret Adams. After the service coffee was served by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be on Sunday, October 13, at 10.30am and all are welcome.

Senior Citizen Luncheon Club - The club were delighted to welcome the new Minister, Rev Bruce Russell to the Lunch Club and they all enjoyed a lovely lunch together. Thanks to Chris and Kay Miles for helping them out this month. Birthday greetings were sung to Stella and everyone had a lovely piece of birthday cake to take home with them. Open doors - Volunteers from Westow Cricket Club welcomed a group of walkers into the cricket pavilion for pre ordered lunch on Sunday, September 22, raising money for the pavilion and cricket club. Sixteen people enjoyed a selection of sandwiches, cakes and quiches, along with hot drinks which were the order for the day. The volunteers plan to open the pavilion again on Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, from 10am to 1pm. Serving tea, coffee, home baking and bacon rolls. Everyone is welcome.

Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club is collecting old/unwanted clothes, shoes, belts, hats, bags, bedding and curtains. Items donated will be sold by weight, with the money going towards the running costs of the cricket club. There is to be a collection around Westow village on Saturday, October 19, although anyone wishing to donate items can drop them off before this date by phoning Julie 01653 618214.

WI MEETINGS

Thornton-le-Dale - The September meeting welcomed Sharon Cawte from Ryedale Community Transport. She explained their role in helping people requiring transport, the cost of their services and who can benefit from them. This was followed by a very informative talk from Karen Fisher and Cheryl Chappell, from Barclays Bank. They explained various scams mainly email and online scams and how to avoid them. Congratulations to Sue Shuttleworth on winning the WI trophy for handicrafts at the recent Thornton Dale Show. Next meeting in October will be the harvest auction.

YCA REPORTS

Wombleton - June welcomed 17 members and one guest to the September meeting. She reminded members that come 2020 they will need a new treasurer and a new chairperson as both she and Christine were stepping down at the end of this year. June emphasised that the group cannot function without these two officers and would have to close, which would be a great loss to the community. Carol reported on the Ryedale Show and congratulated those members who had won with their entries, unfortunately this year we did not take home any trophies, that pleasure went to Farndale YCA. A list was made available for members to sign if they wished to attend the harvest festival on October 4 and the pre-Christmas lunch on November 18. The competition for a flower photograph was won by Daisy with 10pts. Jan introduced Ann Smith, ably assisted by her husband Paul, who was to give the group a flower arranging demonstration. Ann is an accomplished flower arranger who gave us many useful tips regarding design and care of the flowers. Paul introduced each of the three arrangements; an Autumn Basket, a “Les Miserables” themed arrangement and a Christmas table decoration, with appropriate music. Jan thanked Ann on behalf of the members for her inspiring demonstration which made it look very easy and which gave us all an incentive to try our hand at this floral art. The raffle was drawn, which included two of the arrangements and a bunch of the unused flowers.
