THE North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has announced the winning photographers for their charity calendar, celebrating the world of steam trains.

The NYMR launched the competition to raise donations for Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey, which maintains the 180-year-old railway and keeps carriages, tracks and bridges in good condition.

A total of 350 images were submitted by photographers from across the UK, which were shortlisted down to 48 by judges at the NYMR. The final images were put to the public vote and received an estimated 10,000 votes from railway fans.

Laura Strangeway, marketing manager at NYMR, said: “We have been blown away by not only the number of beautiful photographs, but also the level of engagement the competition has seen.”

Two entries from photographer Keith Harris won a spot for both June and August with his picturesque shot of Levisham station and blooming countryside heather set in the backdrop of the North York Moors.

Paul Ming’s was the most voted for, with a staggering 1,238 votes. The stand-out shot of two volunteers chatting away on a bench outside Goathland Station will be placed in the month of March.

Laura added: “A huge congratulations to all the winners.

“The calendar will showcase the true beauty behind our much-loved railway, its famous history and the stunning countryside the carriages pass through each day.”

As well as featuring in next year’s calendar, the 11 winners of the competition will also receive a four-person ticket to this year’s annual Steam Gala, taking place from September 27 to 29.
