Tea, Chat and History - The first Tea, Chat & History of the 2018/19 season will be held in the village hall, from 2pm to 4pm, on Monday, September 2. Admission £1. It will be the usual relaxed format but with the addition of a rolling slide show, history magazines to peruse and Archive open for viewing.

AYTON

Gala - Ayton Village hall will be holding its annual gala on Saturday, September 7, from 11am to 4pm. This promises to be a fantastic event with stalls and activities for all the family, including, bouncy castles, car boot sale, rescue ponies, tug of war, birds of prey, craft fair, fun dog show, face painting, children’s games and much more. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - There is no service in the village church this week but everyone is welcome at the 11am Communion service at Wykeham, which will include a Baptism. At 6.30pm Evensong at Hutton Buscel will be take place using the Book of Common Prayer.

FARNDALE

Show - The annual Farndale Show, a traditional dales show, takes place on the showfield and Church Houses on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26. It opens at 9.30am. Adults £5, children £1, under fives free.

Calendar - The 2020 Farndale Calendar, priced £6, will be launched at the Farndale Show.

Flowers - There will be flowers in St Mary’s Church, Church Houses, on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive on Friday, September 6, at 7pm, in Farndale Village Hall, Church Houses. From October, the domino drives will revert to their normal winter season schedule of second Tuesday of month.

HELMSLEY

Cream teas - There will be a cream tea on August 21 at 19 The Limes, Helmsley, from 2pm to 4pm. Entry is £3 per person, which includes cream scone and tea. Raffle. All proceeds go to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Duck race - The annual RNLI duck race will take place on Helmsley Beck, at 3pm, on Monday, August 26. Ducks can be bought for £1 each in Helmsley Market Place, outside The Royal Oak, on the day of the race and also through the weekend. Cash prizes. First duck down £40, second duck down £20, third duck down £10, and £5 for the last little duck. All proceeds to the RNLI.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Quiz - Time is running out to return your quiz sheet back for the Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society. Entries have to be returned by August 23. The Moors Inn at Appleton-le-Moors have kindly donated the prize money. Money raised helps to stage this year’s open show held in the memorial on Saturday, September 21.

Open show - Please can you help? The Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society is in need of tombola prizes for the stall at this year’s open show. Official opening - Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band would like to invite you to the official opening of the new concert hall in Manor Vale, Kirkbymoorside, on Sunday, September 22. Doors open 2.30pm, ceremony at 3pm.

Gift Day - The annual gift day for All Saint’s Church is on Wednesday, August 21, from 8.30am to 1.30pm, outside Age UK charity shop in the Market Place. It is an opportunity for the people of Kirkbymoorside and surrounding area to show their support of our ancient parish church.

Library - Wednesday, August 21, children’s play session, from 10.30am to 11.30am. Free children’s activity, for ages two to six. Come and play with Duplo and Lego blocks. No need to book, just come along on the day and have fun. Also on Saturday, August 31, crafts and storytime, from 10am to noon.

Afternoon Tea - A get-together for All Saint’s Church cleaners proved to be much enjoyed. Along with the vicar Rev Mark Brosnan, two churchwardens Anne Warriner and Les Clarke and 12 members enjoyed sandwiches and homemade cakes. Enterainment was much enjoyed by Lilly Foster playing her recorder and Annie Foster playing the cornet. Thanks to Millie-Annie Foster and Gracie Ball for keeping every one happy with cups of tea. It is hoped to make this event an annual do.

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, August 13. North/South winners were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 57.7 per cent. In second place with 56.2 per cent were Chris Brett and Clarissa Napier. East/West winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 62.8 per cent. In second place with 56.8 per cent were Robin Paige and Steve Lonsdale.

Camera club - Eight members of the Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday evening at Terrington Village Hall to travel to Birkdale Farm in Terrington where they had been invited by the landowners to spend an evening enjoying and photographing the wild life and views at the farm. The next meeting is at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive on September 5 when Andrew Linscott will be giving an illustrated talk titled Taking Stock.

Bridge club - There was an excellent attendance at Malton Bridge Club on Wednesday with Ruth Mattingly and Gladys Thompson emerging as winners. Derek Fox and Richard Hilton took second place ahead of Mike Jackson and Tricia Pearce with John and Beryl Bramall finishing fourth.

Parish Census and GDPR forms - Forms are available at the back of both St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, Malton and St Joseph’s at Pickering. Many people have completed them but not everybody. PICKERING

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, August 13, for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel under the chairmanship of Colin Ruston. Paul Dunn, a retired North Yorkshire Farmer, reflected on farming life, social attitudes, and ongoing fundamental changes. His book is entitled “Dunn and Dusted”. Weekly draw - The numbers for the Pickering Town Football Club weekly draw for the week commencing August 12 were 25, 36 and 12 and the winner was Paul Stein so the pot for next week will be £75. Anyone wishing to join will be most welcome.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the last of the Handicapped Summer Competition, the winners on the night were Joan Taylor and Jean Wardman with 61.25 per cent. In second place with 56.75 per cent were Chris Brett and Pat Hainsworth. In third place with 54.92 per cent were Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough. The overall winners of the summer handicapped competition were Chris Brett and Pat Hainsworth.

Walking group - The Arundel & Brighton Walking Pilgrimage Group will be staying in Pickering overnight on Thursday this week and will be celebrating Mass at St Joseph’s at 8.50am on Friday. Members of the Parish are welcome to join with them for Mass.

RYEDALE

Ryedale Landscape in War and Peace - On Saturday, August 24, from 10am to 1.30pm, Pickering library is to host a new display of responses of Ryedale residents and servicemen to the experiences of units which were based and trained hereabouts during the Second World War. This will present the Yorkshire units such as Green Howards, East Yorkshire and East Riding Yeomanry-all involved at Dunkirk then spearheading on D-Day 75 years ago in the 50th Northumbrian Division. With them on that day were the “anti-obstacle” force such as flail tanks of the 22nd Dragoons (and Royal Engineers) of 79th Armoured Division inspired by General Hobart, initially trained at Whitby and Helmsley, Ryedale, East Yorks and Scarborough with 11th Armoured - joined in Normandy and Europe by Guards Armoured. The display will be resourced by books from North Yorkshire Library Service stock and Rye Writers.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - At two Sunday morning services were Richard at 9.30am and Diana at 11am.

Walk - This Saturday, August 24, Jeff Coates and Kathy Whiting will be undertaking a sponsored walk from Scarborough to Whitby via the old railway line to help raise funds to repair the church roof which suffered a lead theft earlier in the year. Leaving Scarborough Railway Station at 8am they hope, with a few stops along the track, to be at Whitby Railway Station about 2.45pm. Repairs will mean a cost of some £35,000 and although about £15,000 has already been raised events such as this, which it is hoped to raise over £700, will help in meeting this quite unnecessary cost due to the thoughtless actions of others.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Rev Martin Calver. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, organist Gay Marr and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

TERRINGTON

Race club - On Saturday, August 17, Terrington Bowls Club held a race night at Terrington Village Hall. The event was well-supported by the club and local community. A number of local businesses kindly sponsored races and paid for advertising in the race card. A great, fun evening was had by all and over £900 was raised for club funds.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The result from August 12. North/South winners were Pat and George Donnor with 56.7 per cent. In second place with 55 per cent were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell. East/West winners were Lynda Hopwood and Mary Mortonson with 71.3 per cent. In second place with 44 per cent were Kathleen Allnutt and Angela Smith.

WELBURN

Show - The Welburn and District Horticultural Show was held on Saturday, August 10, in the village hall at Welburn. This year was a bumper year for entries with a total of 650 entries submitted by adults and 181 by children. The standard of entries was first class, a matter confirmed by all the judges, who deliberated long and hard over who to award the prizes to. Once judging was over, a bumper crowd came to the hall to see the exhibits and marvel at their quality. Trophies and cups were awarded to the principle victors, and the raffle with prizes worth a total of £1,000, raised a smashing sum. All in all it was a great, fun and enjoyable day. The show committee would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to all who donated prizes and to all those who submitted entries and supported the show in any way.

WESTOW

Annual art exhibition - The annual Westow Art Exhibition, which was held on Friday, August 16, to Sunday, August 18, in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion was a great success. This year’s exhibition was raising money to help purchase a defibrillator for Westow. The defibrillator is to be located either in the village phone box or on the wall of the old village hall. Ron and Julie would like to thank everyone who helped in any way, the artist for entering their work, donating pictures for the raffle, people who gave donations, bought paintings, had hot drinks and slices of cake, donated cakes or came along and enjoyed the exhibition. More than 200 people visited the exhibition over the three days and helped raise £500. The raffle for the Amanda Pickles painting of poppies in Batik was won by Chrissy Keller. Mo Macleod won the painting of a mouse by Sarah Williams. Visitors to the exhibition were asked to vote for their favourite piece of artwork in the exhibition. “Autumn Fades” by Jacqueline Timbrell was the most popular, with “Steam Train through the Moors” by Amanda Pickles as second favourite.

Open house - Volunteers are opening Westow Cricket Pavilion on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25, from 10am to 1pm, on both days. There will be pool, dominoes and cards to play. Footballs are available on request. The TV will be on and there will be a selection of second hand books available by donation. Tea, coffee, home baking and bacon rolls will be on sale. Everyone will be made welcome, including cyclists, walkers and friendly dogs with their owners on leads. Money raised will go towards the running costs of the pavilion and cricket club.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - The next domino drive to raise funds for the village hall will take place on Saturday, August 31, at 7.30pm. £1.50 to play, includes tea and biscuit. All welcome.
