Singalong - The next Singalong will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, May 1, from 5pm to 6pm.

Easter tea - It will be held in the village hall on Monday, April 22, at 3.30pm.

Coffee morning - A church and chapel coffee morning will be held in the village hall on Monday, May 6, from 10am to 11.30am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The Benefice Easter day service is at All Saints at 11am. It will be a Communion service suitable for all ages. Those who would like to roll eggs down Castle Hill should meet before the service at 10.30am at the top of the hill bringing their decorated hard boiled eggs with them. The gates are opposite the gate into the Brompton Primary School playground, just up the road from the village hall. They can then walk to church. Following the service there will be a children’s Easter egg hunt in the churchyard with refreshments at the back of church.

Meeting - At the last indoor meeting of the Brompton Local History Society of 2019 on Wednesday, April 3, Marcus Jecock told members about the deserted medieval village of Hanging Grimston. The next meeting on May 1, is an evening excursion to Rievaulx Abbey led by Trevor Pearson. Parking is limited at Rievaulx so in order to share transport, members will meet in the square at Brompton at 5.30pm. They are expected to be at Rievaulx for 6.30pm. The walk is expected to take 1.5 hours and will include some rough ground; it might rain. If you have any queries please contact Chris Evans.

Grand plant sale - The popular Brompton and District Gardening Club annual plant sale is on Easter Monday, starting at 10am. It takes place in Brompton Village Hall. As usual this is an opportunity to buy reasonably priced home-grown plants particularly suited to this area. There is also coffee and a chance to sit and socialise with fellow gardeners.

BULMER

Bridge club - The winners on March 28 were: 1st John and Anne Prest, 2nd Gill Oxendale and Sheila Johnson. The results for April 4 were: 1st Thelma Hardware and Tom Nutman, 2nd Tim and Judith Scott. The results on Thursday, April 11 were: 1st Anne and John Prest 64.6 per cent; 2nd Les Allan and Chris Calvert, 56.6 per cent.

CROPTON

Fair - The spring fair on April 13 was very successful with local residents and visitors enjoying the facilities in the village hall. The WI cake stall, bric-a-brac and tombola were very busy together with the tea and cakes. The exhibition of work by the late Jean Feaster was greatly admired. A total of £355 was raised for hall funds. The committee have thanked the many helpers.

GILLING EAST

GREAT EDSTONE

Easter Service - Easter Holy communion at St Michael’s on Easter Day, Sunday, April 21 is at 11am and will be taken by Rev Michael Stephens. The “Make Way Service” at St Michael’s Church will take place on Tuesday, April 23, at 7pm.

HAROME

Bowls - Would you like to try the sport of bowls? Harome Bowling Club, Owmen Field Lane, Harome, is holding their open day on Sunday, April 28, at 2pm. New members welcome of all ages. Church - On Palm Sunday Hovingham and Slingsby Methodist Chapel members were joined by The Street Church benefice members to process around the village behind Rev Martin Allwood carrying his Church’s cross from All Saints Church. Rev Ken Gowland conducted the service which concluded inside the Chapel followed by the serving of Holy Communion. Joyce Skelton played the organ. This special service was very well attended and fellowship enjoyed by all.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, April 9: North/South winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 58.3 per cent. In second place were Judith O’Donnell and David Whitehead with 52.9 per cent. East/West Winners were Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 64.8 per cent. In second place were Bo and Tony Simpson with 56.5 per cent. Play of the week goes to Tim and Lesley Vessey, the only pair to bid and make 7NT.

Ladies Fellowship - The April meeting was very well attended and were pleased to welcome several visitors. Kathy Robson began the evening by thanking all those who had helped with the church spring clean. Kathy then read a delightful, and very apt poem, entitled the “Bee-attitudes”. The speaker for the evening was Pauline Closier and her talk was about the trials and tribulations of a bee-keeper’s wife. Cathie Hather, Vera Kendall and Edith Youren celebrate birthdays this month. Kathy, Joan and Baines were the tea hostesses and Louise McNair kindly provided the biscuits. Andrea Cooper won the raffle but there were other lucky winners as Pauline and her husband Philip kindly donated some jars of honey and beeswax bars to the raffle. The next meeting is on Wednesday, May 8, at 7.30pm, in the library and the subject an “Incredible Journey”.

All Saints - A big thank you to all those who helped spring clean the church.

Menzown - Stunning images of cavers crawling along tight muddy and wet passages underground not two miles from Kirkbymoorside were shown by Matt Ewles of York Caving Club to the members Menzown at their last meeting. The talk was entitled “The World beneath our feet”. There were several short videos shown which were embellished with music, and would have been worthy of showing on television. Ian Watson, giving the vote of thanks, said how excellent had been the quality of the videos and how impressive had been the whole talk. The next meeting will be on Monday, May 13, with a presentation by Third Energy on Fracking.

LEAVENING

Easter sunrise - Everyone is welcome to see the sunrise over Leavening on Easter Sunday morning. There will be a brief service and hymn at 6am at Boundale farm (farm next to the primary school), then inside for bacon butties. If that is too early for some people, there is a service later at 2.30pm in Leavening church.

Jigsaw festival - The organisers of the Leavening Jigsaw Festival on Saturday, April 6, would like to thank all who helped, supported and/or made up jigsaws for the festival. £215 was raised for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Leavening church.

Potatoes and buckets - Potatoes and buckets are on sale for £1, for all those wanting to take part in the “potatoes in a bucket” class in this year’s village show in September. They can be collect from Boundales Farm or Swan Cottage in Leavening (both near the primary school).

MALTON

Bridge Club - In the penultimate session of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMP pairs, Madge Allison and Richard Hilton were the winners with 41 points. Mike and Annette Jackson came second with 32 points, followed by John Bramall and Graham Burgess with 17 points. On Thursday afternoon the winners were Audrey Shaw and Richard Hilton as North-South and Charlie Callis and Dave Sonley as East-West. The previous week’s handicap pairs resulted in a win for John and Beryl Bramall ahead of Keith Freeman and Mike Shawcross then Rob Ashdown and Mike Jackson, while Thursday saw wins for Joan Pickering and Philip Mason and Roger and Ruth Mattingly.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, March 12, for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Colin Ruston. Member Arthur Strickson gave a fascinating talk about the “Shetland Bus”, a Second World War organisation responsible for moving people between Norway and the UK. Workshop - Pickering Library is holding a free “Knit a Teddy” drop-in workshop on Monday, April 29, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The workshop is suitable for confident knitters of all ages. You will just need to bring your assorted double-knitting yarn and size 10 needles (3.25mm) and you can join volunteer Judith for a relaxing and creative afternoon. Bridge Club - Pickering Bridge Cub played for the Sue Boag Trophy in the latest session of duplicate bridge. The winners were Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown with 74.31 per cent. In second place with 58.33 per cent were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall. In third place with 53.47 per cent were Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough.

Cinema - The next Family Cinema is on Saturday, May 4, at 6.30pm, in the Pickering Memorial Hall. Doors open at 6pm and the film starts at 6.30pm. Action morning - A Love Where You Live action morning to rid the village of litter, weeds and rubbish will take place on Saturday, April 27, meet in the village hall car park from 9.30am to pick up high-visibility, tools etc.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The 9.30am service of Holy Communion for Palm Sunday was led by the Rev Maurice Jennett, Jim and Marion Baird were the welcomers, Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and Janet Lamb and Laura Normandale served refreshments. Steve Raettig led the 11am service of modern worship. Steve also led the sung worship with Richard Fuller, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Tim Cremer led the intercessions, Helen Swallow read and Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club. Jo Taylor was the welcomer and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

Easter services - On Easter Sunday services will be Holy Communion at 9.30am, Modern Worship and Holy Communion with reserved sacrament at 11am and Worship@6 at 6pm.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Nikki Warner. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, the welcomer Margaret Harris, organist Joan Rue and Margaret Neave took the offering. The service began with the Lent prayers being read by Sheila Gray and the placing of the palms at the base of the cross. Allan Dunnington gave the bible reading from Luke’s gospel. During the service palm crosses were given to the congregation. The Easter service next week at 10.30am will be taken by Rev Mary Jackman and Holy Communion will be observed.

SHERBURN

Community club - Vinyasa Flow Yoga every Monday from 7pm to 8pm, £5 each, with mats provided. All abilities welcome. Saturday, April 27 - band night with Accoustic Brew. Sunday, April 28, will be quiz night and the envelope game stands at £120 this month. Advance dates for your diary are Sunday, May 5, cricket fundraising match with Scorers XI versus Sherburn XI, starting at 1pm, with live music from Eezy Goin and barbecue from 4pm to 7pm.

St Hilda’s Church - Morning Worship was led by Barbara Grice and began with the Palm Crosses being blessed – Palm Sunday was the theme for the talk. Sidespersons were Sue Mennell and Carol Stephenson, Bill Hyndford supplied the music and the lesson was read by Christine Ashton. Coffee was served at the close of the service by Jean and Keith Usher. On Good Friday there will be a Walk of Witness starting at St Hilda’s Church at 11am, then the Cross will be carried up to the Methodist Church, via the Village Hall. Coffee and hot cross buns will be served in the Methodist Church Hall at the close. The Easter Day service will be a Benefice service at East Heslerton. On Sunday, April 28, St Hilda’s will be pleased to welcome their friends from the Methodist Church for the quarterly United Service, when the Rev Kevin Ridd will be the preacher. Soup and Pud will be served at the close of the service.

Duck Race - This will be held at East Beck at 3pm on Monday, April 22, raising funds for Sherburn Cricket club and the Memorial Tubs. Cost is £1 per duck and there will be cash prizes for the first three ducks and also a special prize for the last duck home. Duck sponsors available at the East Riding and after the race there will be a raffle drawn at the East Riding. Any donations of raffle prizes would be appreciated. Phone Tracy Vitty on 01944 711403.

Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury. This is held every Tuesday from 10am to 11.30am. There is no charge, but any kind donations for coffee are given to charity. Come and enjoy coffee and chat together. Thursday is the craft club from 1.30pm in the hall. No need to book just bring your craft and come along. The worship for Palm Sunday was led by Christine Fenwick assisted by the Worship Team. Organist Chris Cade played for the group and prayers were led by Sandra Cade, Jean Brown and Liz Aconley. They re-enacted the story of Palm Sunday, thanks to India, Kiara, Jacob and Janet and the whole congregation waved palm branches (made for them by the Messy Church the evening before) and laid cloaks for the donkey to walk on. Palm branches were offered to all and the children made prayer crowns. All age Worship for Easter Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Diane Robinson.

Messy Church - Members met in the Chapel Hall for tea, thanks to RJ’s for the chips. After tea members moved into the Chapel for the opening worship time. Messy time followed with handprint painting, palm branch making, crowns for the King of Kings and a biscuit craft of an empty tomb. Closing worship was led by Rev Kevin Ridd when he told the events of Holy Week and the time of rejoicing that was to follow on Easter Sunday. The next Messy church will be on Saturday, May 11, when Sandra will be telling about one of her special stories. Meet for tea at 4.45pm.

Sherburn Primary School - The Wolds and Vale Federation footballers took on a team at Weaverthorpe school on Wednesday evening, a great display of teamwork resulted in a 4-1 win for our children. They hope you all enjoyed the Easter bingo session on Thursday evening; £241 was raised by Friends of Sherburn school. The Celebration Parent Assembly on the last day of term saw the presentation of the awards for achievement.

SLINGSBY

Service - On Easter Sunday, April 21, at the methodist church, at 9am, there will an Easter breakfast and then at 10.30am there is an Easter Morning service led by our local congregation suitable for all ages, including communion. The cross outside chapel will be decorated with flowers before the service to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

STONEGRAVE

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The result from Monday, April 8. North/South winners were Peter and Lesley Jaram with 59.4 per cent and in second place Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 55.6 per cent. East/West winners were Angela Smith and Kathleen Allnutt with 59.4 per cent and in second place Pat and George Donnor with 57.8 per cent.

WESTOW

Open house - Volunteers will be opening Westow Cricket Club Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 1pm, over the Easter weekend. There is a pool table, cards, dominoes, second hand books (by donation), free wi-fi, good company, together with tea, coffee, home baking and bacon rolls. Money raised is in aid of the running costs for the cricket club and pavilion.

Church open days - The church of St Mary, in Westow, are having two open days over the Easter weekend on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, from 10am to 4pm, each day. There will be a children’s Easter egg hunt, refreshments, the chance to look around this beautiful church and find out about the church’s history. Those visiting are advised there are no toilet facilities at the church.

Plant stall - A date for the diaries of all gardeners. The annual Westow Playing fields Association plant stall will be on Sunday, May 5, in the Westow Cricket Pavilion car park, at 10am. There is usually lots of plants to purchase, including bedding plants. There will also be tea, coffee and home baking on sale. The money raised from plant sales and the refreshments will be used for the upkeep of the Westow play area. Donations of plants to sell are always appreciated and can be taken on the day.

Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club held one of their regular collections of old unwanted clothes, soft toys, hats, belts, shoes, scarves, bedding and curtains on Saturday, April 13. More than 40 bags were collected and will be sold will be sold by weight in aid of the cricket club. Anyone still with items they wish to donate, should phone Julie Price on 01653 618214 or bags can be left outside 5 Kirkham View, Westow, up until April 25. All donations of items will be appreciated. Carrier bags and general refuse bags can also be used.
