APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Parish council - The new dog waste bin has arrived has been installed on the corner of South Ings. A cheque was issued to Appleton-le-Moors History Group to cover printing costs on behalf of the parish council. Jonathan Allison talked about the CL162 Common Protection Group attitude towards the current planning applications concerning Spaunton Quarry and the Common Land exchange. Margot Cairncross asked if a contribution could be made towards the felling of a large sycamore in the church grounds. This item will be added to the next meeting’s agenda. Next the meeting will at 6.30pm on May 9, in the village hall.

Tea, Chat & History - The final meeting of the season will be at 2pm on April 1, in the village hall. It will restart on September 2.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The next Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood will be on March 30 at 10am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Whitby or Bust - Marcel Guillou’s new comedy, Whitby Or Bust, written for the Brompton Radio Players who will present the new production in Brompton Village Hall on Friday, April 5, at 8pm, and again on Saturday, April 6, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 to include a buffet supper and they are available from Marylyn Muir on 01723 850412. This is an adult show. Licensed bar available.

Domino drive - The next domino drive will be the last for this winter season and will be held in Brompton Village Hall on Thursday, March 28, at 7.30pm. Entrance is £2 to include supper.

Gardening Club - The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 27, at 7.30pm. This month’s meeting will be a talk given by Robin Arundale on the Wold Barn Owl Group.

Church - There is no service at All Saints Brompton on Sunday. On Sunday there will be a 9.30am Communion service at Snainton, an 11am Communion at Wykeham and Evensong at 6.30pm at Hutton Buscel. The Mothering Sunday Service on March 31 will be a joint one at Wykeham at 10.30am.

Quiz night - The Village Hall Committee is staging a quiz night on Friday, March 29, at 7pm, to raise funds towards its running costs. The event will include an Italian meal, but tickets are limited to 50 people. They are available from Dee Edmondson at Southfield, Middle Lane, Hutton Buscel.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz will take place at the Crown Inn, Hutton-le-Hole, on Sunday, April 7, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. The event is aid of St Chad’s Church, Hutton-le-Hole.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The results from Tuesday, March 12. North/South winners were Pat Hainsworth and Angela Smith with 60.1 per cent. In second place were Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 59.8 per cent. East/West winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 70.6 per cent and in joint second place with 60 per cent were Steve Lonsdale with Robin Paige and Tony and Bo Simpson. There were two pairs who bid and made a small slam and two pairs who bid and made a grand slam.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting on Tuesday, March 26, will have guest speaker Tanya Short. Leader is Kath and the tea hostesses are Jean and Margaret. The meeting will take place at the Methodist church Jubilee Room at 7.30pm.

Menzown - Back by popular demand, member Leslie Ayling returned as the speaker for the meeting to tell more tales of his service in the RAF. Leslie told several stories of the delights of guard duty when it was necessary to outwit the natives who would try to steal anything of value. Concluding his highly-entertaining talk, Leslie said that not having had any relations in the forces, it had been a most interesting and enlightening experience. The vote of thanks was given by Phil Collier. The next meeting will be on the caves of Hutton-le-Hole. The chairman was Richard Sharpe.

Environment group - At the Repair Café on Saturday, the items brought for repair included two table-lamps, a chair, a coffee table, radio, wheeler-seat bag, computer, hand-mixer, shredder, a moth-eaten pullover, two toasters and a hair-dryer. The next Repair Café will be on Saturday, May 18, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Please bring your broken items along. One of the volunteers offers 3D printing of replacement plastic components, up to 8in x 8in. The replacement part will be created with recycled plastic. Ladies fellowship - The March meeting saw the ladies once again getting together to give All Saints a good spring clean. Afterwards they enjoyed a welcome cuppa and biscuits and the opportunity to have a chat. Thank you so much to the ladies who gave so generously of their time and energy. All who use the church really appreciate it. Ann Pennock and Helen Robertshaw celebrate March birthdays. It is nice to be able to wish Helen a happy birthday as it is Helen who always remembers members’ birthdays and dispatches the cards. Members are working on the Lenten project – hats, mittens and scarves for the shoe box appeal. Last month members took a collection to sponsor Judy Turnbull’s skydive to raise funds for the new band room and concert hall in Manor Vale. Judy raised £1,600. The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 10, at 7.30pm, in the library when members will be hearing about the trials and tribulations in the life of a beekeeper’s wife.

MALTON

Church - Stations of the Cross during Lent at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church will be on Wednesdays at 7pm with one on April 10, at 5pm, for children. Different people will lead each week beginning with the CAFOD group. Local churches are organising a simple lunch of soup and bread in the Baptist Church in Wells Lane on the Fridays of Lent, from noon to 1.15pm. All proceeds will go to Christian Aid. The St Leonard’s Parish is due to provide food and serve the lunches on Friday, March 29. Members of both St Leonard’s and St Joseph at Pickering are being invited to enjoy an evening with The Plastic Paddies group at The Engine Shed, Steam and Moorland Garden Centre in Pickering on Saturday, March 16, from 7.30pm to midnight. Tickets at £10 will include a light supper. The event is being held for a 10-year-old girl who is one of only nine children in the world suffering from bilateral striatal necrosis which affects mobility. The Red Mission Boxes at St Leonard’s raised £800.50 last year and anyone who would like a red box can speak with Father Tim Bywater or Julie Render.

Valentine’s Dance - The Malton branch of Yorkshire Cancer Research held a Valentine’s Dance at Malton & Norton Golf Club which raised more than £4,000. Many local businesses supported the evening with donations for an auction and a raffle was held. The Malton committee would like to thank everyone who attended the evening and all sponsors. Malton & Norton Golf Club has recently undergone a major refurbishment and is open to everyone for coffee, lunches, Sunday lunch and functions.

Bridge club - In the latest session of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMPs competition there was a big win for Philip Mason and John Hayton with 62 points. In second place were Ed Robinson and Dave Massey on 34 points with Rob Ashdown and Derek Fox third with 17 points. On Thursday the North-South winners were Sheila Miller and Josie Halliwell ahead of Sally Beswick and Teresa Belt, while Tony Lindsay and John Bramall won as East-West with Terry Herbert and Steve Hodgson in second place.

Meeting - The March meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group held in Trinity Methodist Church was well supported. A demonstration of Dancing with Parkinson’s was given by Angela Kirkham-Raine and her team with all members and carers taking part. This was followed with a very informative talk by Hannah Miller, speech therapist at Scarborough Hospital. The April meeting is the Spring Lunch for members and guests at Cedar Barn Farm Shop. Quiz - Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday, March 22, at 9pm. Cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper for only £2. Mike and Col were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was a rollover.

Bingo - A prize bingo for centre funds will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, March 27. Doors open 6.45pm, eyes down 7.15pm.

SEAMER

Methodist Church - The preacher on the second Sunday in Lent was Lorraine Booth, the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering, the organist was Doreen Lawson, and Bob Jackman was the vestry steward. The Lenten symbols, the basin and towel, were laid by Bert Blower. Lorraine urged us to use the season of Lent to change our lifestyles to preserve Gods world for future generations. Instead of giving up chocolates and biscuits, try to reduce our use of plastic, shop locally, think about food miles, use renewable energy. Commit to try not buying any new clothes throughout Lent, see what we can do without. The lesson from Genesis was read by Jean Berrington, Tina Greenley read from Philippians, and the Gospel lesson was read by Jean Cockerill. Refreshments were served by Margaret Harris. The service next week will be led by Amanda Clayton. Village Voices will be performing on Saturday, March 30, at 7pm. Tickets £6 on the door, to include a light supper. The Singing for Fun group, will visit Queen Street on March 26 at 2.15pm. Everyone welcome. Holy Habits will be at Seamer on Wednesday, April 3, at 7pm.

St Martin’s - Rev Maurice Jennett presided at the 9.30am service of holy communion and preached from the account in Luke’s gospel of Jesus’ sorrowful prayer for Jerusalem. Kieron Middleton gave the bible reading and led the intercessions, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns. Kate Middleton ran the children’s activities. The sidespeople were Dot Francis and Frances Simons, and Sue Johnson and Julie Stephenson served refreshments between the services. The 11am service of modern worship was led by lay preacher John Worthy. John also led the intercessions and Steve Raettig gave the reading from Philippians, chapter 3. The sung worship was led by John Grice with John Taylor and Steve. Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Community Club - A busy night of bingo witnessed £528 leave the building in an entertaining night’s play. Higher/lower game not won so moves to £40 at the next bingo on Saturday, April 6, which will be the last one before the summer break. Congratulations to Matty’s Millions winner collecting a cool £90 million. Thanks to Val for helping to sell books and also to Nat for setting up.

Methodist News - The Tuesday Coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury. Members are getting closer to their target for St Catherine’s Hospice. If you enjoy crafting pop along to the Chapel Hall on Thursday at 1.30pm and join the group there. Sunday Worship for the second Sunday in Lent was led by the Worship Team. The Lenten Liturgy was read by Mary Dickinson and Judith Ruston. Organist Chris Cade led the pre-worship praise and Jean Brown the opening prayers. The gospel lesson was read by Kim Canterbury and the Psalm by Elizabeth Aconley. After blessing one another with the grace, members enjoyed coffee together in the hall. Next week worship will be led by Rev Martin Calver. 10am prayers in the hall moving into the chapel at 10.15am for pre-worship leading into the Lenten Liturgy and service at 10.30am.

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, March 24, at 9am, when Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate. On Sunday, March 31, there will be a Benefice service for Mothering Sunday at 10am.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Sinnington People’s Guild met on Tuesday, March 12. Margaret and Janet, from the Malton Museum, brought objects that had been excavated fairly locally. From times BC to 1920 - each object was described and examined. A favourite was a Roman tile embedded with a child’s footprint. Sue Galley welcomed and thanked the ladies. Jill Simpson was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The next and final meeting is a musical evening on Tuesday, March 26, at 7.15pm. It is a welcome return of the White Rose Male Voice Praise from Castleford. Supper will be served and a collection taken for Guild funds. All welcome.

SNAINTON

Village Hall - On Friday, March 29, the village hall will be hosting the return of the Easy Band from the Scarborough Music Centre. Beginning at 7.30pm, these talented youngsters will be playing a varied programme under the baton of Ralph Alder. Tickets priced £5 are available from John Beadle on 01723 859442 or at the door. Refreshments will be available. Please come along and support this popular event. All proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the premises.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

WESTOW

Spring Fair - Westow Cricket Club annual spring fair is on Saturday, March 23, from 10.30am to 1pm. Entry is free. Stalls include locally hand-made goods, cards, gifts, sausages, pork pies and much more. The cricket club stalls are cakes and home baking, second-hand books and goods and a tombola. They will also be serving tea, coffee, cold drinks and bacon rolls throughout the event. There is to be an obstacle course outside on the cricket ground for children aged 11 years and under to attempt, with a certificate for all those who complete it. Everyone is welcome. Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club is holding a collection of old unwanted clothes, soft toys, hats, belts, scarves, bedding and curtains on Saturday, April 13, around Westow. Items donated will be sold by weight in aid of the cricket club. Collection bags are being given to all households in Westow and asked to leave donated items out before 10.30am. WOMBLETON

Domino drive - A domino drive will take place in the village hall on Saturday, March 30, raising funds for the village hall. £1.50 to play, including tea and biscuits.

Quiz evening - A date for your diary is the quiz evening on Friday, April 12, in the village hall at 7.30pm.

WI MEETINGS

Snainton - President Angela Howgate welcomed 43 members and one guest. Angela introduced Frances Langley from Ebberston who gave a most interesting illustrated talk to the members about her upbringing and family history in India. She had brought along some beautiful old photos of her ancestors as well as medals and other items of note. Members were also treated to some savouries which Frances had baked for them, including the family’s favourite “Curry Puffs”. Jill Allen gave the vote of thanks after Frances had answered many questions. While members were enjoying their savoury and sweet refreshments Angela pointed out items of interest in the Federation Newsletter. Wendy Craig-Tyler had organised for members to go for lunch at Nineteen09 at Scarborough TEC on Friday, March 15. The Spring Group meeting is at Ayton Village Hall on March 19, 7pm. Federation quiz at Pickering on May 20, at 7pm, names for teams please. An invitation had been received from Wykeham & Hutton Buscel WI to their centenary picnic at Wykeham Cricket Ground on August 11, all friends and family invited. Di Ford is organising a trip to Scampston Walled Garden and Hall on June 7, more details next month. The competition for a beaded/jewelled accessory was won by Hazel Thompson, second Marilyn Bellinger and third Kaye Clyde. There was a second competition for a Victorian Style Valentine, which was voted on by members to go forward to the Spring Group meeting and this was won by Joan Smith. The next meeting is on April 2, at 7.30pm, when noted local artist Russell Lumb will paint a portrait of one of the members, the competition is “A Host of Golden Daffodils”. Members are always welcome. As Lent was starting the following day members were urged by Angela (if they hadn’t already decided what to give up) to give up plastic packaging and bags. Sue Shutt also suggested that every day during Lent members put an item of clothing that they’d not worn recently into a (not plastic) bag and take it to a charity shop.

Thornton-le-dale - The March meeting welcomed Julie Ryan from International Rescue Corps. She gave an extremely interesting talk about the work the group carry out. She was a very inspiring lady with nerves of steel and great dedication. After 28 years of voluntary service to the organisation covering so many disasters all over the world such as earthquakes in Turkey and Japan and many more. Work also included that in the UK locating missing persons, recovering casualties from explosion, rescuing persons, animals from floods and much more. Our president Margaret Smith thanked her for a truly unforgettable presentation.
