A MAJOR new development could transform a historic seafront in North Yorkshire.

Plans are currently being developed by Flamingo Land for a planning application which would allow it to develop the former Futurist Theatre site in Scarborough, with a screening report submitted to Scarborough Borough Council which outline the plans for Flamingo Land Coast.

Gordon Gibb, chief executive, said a public consultation would be held following an Environmental Impact Assessment and as further details were submitted to planning bosses.

He said the attraction hoped to hear what the public had to say about the proposal. Mr Gibb said: “Flamingo Land is very much committed to creating a new, exciting family attraction in Scarborough and we are looking forward to sharing these plans with the public.”

Technical surveys have already been carried out on the site, with these artist’s impressions showing early designs for the building and development.

Talks are taking place with ride manufacturers to develop unique rides for the site, and specialist engineers are already assessing the safety and installation aspects of what Flamingo Land say will be “a cutting-edge and unique attraction”.

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, called the new plans “exciting”, and the authority was “delighted” with the submission of the plans for the development.

He said: “The proposed transformation of the former Futurist site into a state-of-the-art and extremely high quality attraction that exceeds the aspirations of today’s families would be a game changer for South Bay, Scarborough and indeed the whole of the Yorkshire coast.”
