THE winners of Ryedale’s third business awards have been announced.

An awards ceremony, attended by finalists, sponsors and guests, was held at the Feathers in Helmsley last Tuesday.

Anna Lupton, who organises the awards, said: “The number of finalists much exceeded previous years as there were so many who deserved recognition for their dedication and hard work.

“We are delighted that there are so many different businesses entered this year.

“We would like to thank all our sponsors who made it possible.”

The awards included Ryedale Champion, sponsored by Cuckavalda Gundogs, which went to 99-year-old Raymond Whitwell.

Anna said: “How many people would still be working as this gentleman celebrates his 100th birthday this year.

“For 45 years he was getting up at 3am to go to Hull and Leeds markets to stock his shop with fresh fruit and vegetables.

“He had a stall on Helmsley Market come rain or shine until he was 90 years old.

“He also ran stalls at Pocklington, Driffield and Seamer. He still sells fruit and vegetables from his home where his loyal local customers go.

“We must thank him for what he went through in the Second World War when he took part in Operation Market Garden and went without food for nine days. Since then he has flown the flag for Ryedale with his annual trip of remembrance to Arnhem.

“His medals include the Italy and Africa Stars, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France-Germany Star and the Second World War medal.
