A MALTON business which has traded in the town for 134 years has moved to an online presence.

G Woodall & Sons Ltd has closed its premises in Market Place to reach a wider audience for its canvas bags, goods and tarpaulin.

Winston Kobylka took over the firm in 2011, following the retirement of John Woodall, great-grandson of the founder, and his wife Hilary.

He said: “Our business continues and thrives. Export grows and our workshop within Malton continues with industrial and cover making in PVC and canvas, together with sport-related covers.

“The shop front at Market Place was a wonderful location for friends and colleagues to visit and indeed provided the social venue conducive to the artisanal canvas bags. The bags are still our focus and continue with new ranges coming out.

“While sadly we have moved from the high street, we have a new spring collection coming and new designs to reflect our customers needs. We enjoyed growing our customer base at Market Place, and it is positive that we continue still making the artisan goods and specialist items we are known for.”

Mr Kobylka added: “The activities behind the scenes at Woodalls comprise a number of industrial and technical methods of work.

“Although Woodalls has resided in Market Place for 134 years, we have machinery which is modern, for example ultra sonic welders, which have to be operated under certain standards and their size may not be useful in narrow premises.

“In addition, the tolerances of these methods require certain temperature standards which need to be maintained. Our other work, inking and fluids need a similar standard of operation – these we can accommodate elsewhere.”
