KIRKBYMOORSIDE History Group has produced a 2019 calendar combining old images with artefacts.

The group aims to promote the study of local history, assists with research in the Kirkbymoorside area and helps to secure archival material and artefacts.

Louise Mudd, from the group, said: “We hold quite an array of objects, as well as photographs and documents, and we thought this was a nice way to show people how linking the two makes them both more relevant.

“The sales of the calendars goes to pay the ground rent for our Kirkby Archives, which is becoming increasingly full.”

Louise said they would love to hear from anyone who was interested in helping out with transcribing or cataloguing. “One volunteer is currently tackling a rather faded copy of a manuscript dating back to 1823 and is revealing some fascinating rituals and beliefs from the area,” she said.

“Next year’s Heritage Day on Saturday, July 20, will be based around our archives and local characters for the town’s history.

“We hope to open up the archives and also have local actor Dominic Goodwin perform another of his wonderful evening’s entertainment for us.

“As part of the preparations, we have also been working to uncover more about a Crimean War Veteran, Joseph Sleightholme, whose gravestone was restored back in 2014 as part of our HLF Project.

“His relatives very recently visited us to pass on some invaluable family information, which should complete the project for the Heritage Day.”
