FEARS have been raised that children are being put in danger due to traffic volumes near their school.

A parent has expressed concerns after witnessing vehicles repeatedly mounting the pavement near Norton Primary School in Langton Road.

Jeremy Wilson, who lives in Norton, said: “Last week, when I was walking my six and three-year-old daughters to school, a bus mounted the pavement when it was adjacent to me and if I hadn’t moved it would have knocked me down.

“Fortunately, I was stood closest to the road and moved out the way, it wasn’t until I banged on the bus that the driver stopped.

“I don’t understand why they don’t adopt a one-way system to minimise the amount of large vehicles having to squeeze past each other.

“Or they need to remove more on street parking allowing two full lanes of traffic.

“I hope something can be done about this before there is a terrible accident.”

Norton town councillor Bryan Barratt said: “We cannot allow vehicles to mount the footpath in order to avoid oncoming school buses.

“This places school children in unnecessary danger, and I shall be seeking support from my colleagues on Norton Town Council in calling for the immediate implementation of a one-way system for school buses at key times.”

Norton county councillor Keane Duncan said: “We continue to see traffic problems in Langton Road, particularly at the start and end of the school day.

“We have seen a succession of measures put in place, including bollards, extra signage and a 20mph zone.

“Extra parking enforcement has also been requested and the school has written to all parents to provide road safety advice.

“While all of these measures are welcome, traffic continues to prove problematic.

“I have, therefore, asked highways to look again at further step.”
