MORE than 5,000 poppies made by members and friends of Thornton-le-Dale WI have gone on display to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War
The Poppies on the Green display includes 40 wreaths paying tribute to each one of the men from the village who lost their lives in the two world wars.
An area of white poppies represents Remembrance for all victims of war and a Commitment to peace without conflict. The purple poppy display explains and commemorates the role of animals in the war.
In the windows of the Hill Memorial Institute, next to the war memorial, WI members have made a display of replica Sweetheart Pincushions.
The original Sweetheart Pincushions were produced at the end of the First World War and given to wounded soldiers as they recovered in hospital. The completed pincushions were sent or given to wives, mothers and sweethearts – hence the name "Sweetheart Pincushion".
Thornton-le-Dale WI have thanked everyone that has helped with the display
